Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
They are perfectly fine used for short periods of time to help heal and ulcer, etc. But really any time after about 16 wks and you get pretty dependent and it's hard to get off of them.
I tried many and some were hard on my system. I ended up using Prevacid (lansoprazole). I started a very long time ago and took them on advise of my doctor for over 15 YRS!!
I am no longer taking them now.
Does your dr want you to take them?
I've been on them for around 3 years and without them my heartburn is just too bad to live a normal life. I will probably be on them the rest of my life unless I try and go for reflux surgery, or it magically goes away at some point.
If your symptoms aren't unbearable then by all means avoid them and try a weaker acid blocker like Zantac, but if that doesnt cut it and it is impacting your life then my advice is dont be afraid of them. Take what you need to get better.
