Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
Really strange and worrying as I need to stay hydrated but cant take much of the pain it makes me so depressed :(
Am I the only one that has a problem with water?
Perhaps you are hypersensitive to distention & stretching of the stomach & duodenum which can occur more with consumption of liquids than solids.
What about soup? Does that hurt?
Personally I have to be careful not to overfill my stomach. Stomach distention stimulates acid production. Also my motility goes a bit crazy if I mix eating & drinking together. I have to do them separately. ie, not drink at mealtimes.
On days when I am lazy & don't drink "enough" I actually feel a lot better. Stupid digestive system.
How much are you drinking at a time? Lots or just a few sips?
What about gastroparesis or some other motility dysfunction?
What about if you just drink 100ml or 50ml at a time?
Dont think I have gastroparesis, my anti-depressent is supposed to help with that plus I've tried domperidone in the past but it doesn't make much difference.
At the moment I am just taking tiny sips between meals, and then drinking about 200ml each time I have food. I also try to have watery food like stew and or porridge to make sure Im hydrated and I seem to be ok with it.
I find it so strange, cant think of a reason plain water would do this, maybe it is just washing away my stomach lining, like if you drink lots of water your mouth gets a bit dry and coarse?
I've just bought some soy milk, Im going to try drinking that instead of water and cut plain water out completely, and see if it makes any difference.
I can't drink Brita filtered water though. The filtration reduces the pH of the water ie, makes it more acidic! It can hurt & do damage by activating the nasty enzyme pepsin.
Andy - I think you may be worrying unnecessarily. I just reread your post & saw that you've only had this problem for a couple of days! Plus you've had diarrhea. You've probably got a bug or virus of some description & currently got increased inflammation. I get crazy symptoms when I get any bugs. I'm sure once you recover then this problem will calm down. Obviously if it doesn't then go see a Doctor.
Water can't wash away stomach lining. Although filtered (acidic) water might do damage via pepsin activation. I guess water might wash excess acid further along the system. Whereas food consumption would likely buffer the acid somewhat.
Actually Andy I'm clutching at straws. I have no idea. Gastritis is simply crazy. I can eat avocados in the morning, but not in the afternoon. I can eat banana cake, but not bananas.
Coconut water was the answer for me. It has to be the right kind though. No sugar added, no pulp, all natural. It really soothes my stomach when its bad, and it was the only thing i could drink when I couldn't even have water.
Thai heritage coconut water - 100% natural is what i get at dollarama. i love this stuff.
it's also 120 calories per can so if you can't eat right it's a good answer
Toomuchpho you are allergic to nuts. You need to check of its all nuts or just certain ones. When they are cooked, it hydrogenates the proteins or something and so you can eat them. Allergic to nurlts and seeds but can eat roasted peanuts. Was tested to confirm it.
Smilelikeyoumeanit - it seems your allergic to bananas.
