same problem for 4 years now & feeling hard to breath sometimes... the symptoms starting before gastritis 2 year and after gastritis 2 year..when the problem starting i did the endoscopy and they found (mild slight hiatal hernia+mild Oesophagitis) so i took nexium and got some relief and the symptoms was off and on for 2 year, after that gastritis did start and the symptoms continues...so i can't find out what's going on..

I also have hernia and esophagitis/gerd/I sometimes have tight throat and its difficult to breath or eat.
It gets better when I do deep breathing exercises and try to calm myself down.Stress is definite trigger for me apart from bad foods for reflux

Also if its hernia related you may be able to find some relief with a chiropractor or self massage.Theres lots of instruction on e-bay.I do it sometimes and it does help

Unfortunately,i did not following specific diet (I wish that), but i noticing that the symptoms strongly related to the diet..So when i cut down the bad foods i get fair relief with taking of nexium of course..

my stress level is up and down but it's strongly connected with the tightness of the stomach and band feeling.. i mean when my stomach feels tight and banded my breathing goes away and the stress level raising up and sometimes got panic attack from this symptoms..

so,for my situation i don't know what's going on..it came from my stomach or it's all from my head!!

about the breathing exercises,when i got the attack i can't do it because it's increase the symptoms and the stress level raising dramatically,,

i'm just tired from this thing,,the doctors seemed helpless!!

The tight band feeling can be spasms within the inflamed stomach itself or it can be from the diaphragm muscle above spasming/splinting because it does not want to press down on the inflamed stomach. In severe cases it progresses to shallow breathing, rapid heart rate & hyperventilation.

Of course a hernia can also significantly impact on the movement of the diaphragm muscle.

I see a great Chiropractor who works a lot on my abdomen & releases the diaphragm.

At home I also practice "stomach breathing" to strengthen my diaphragm.

This "banding" feeling has been a problem and a mystery for me for years. Long before the Gastritis. We MS-ers have something called "MS HUG" which is just like the banding, tight feeling under the ribs from gastritis.

I always assumed mine was from the MS. And it probably was at one time. But now.. this squeezing is worse than ever and more centered in just a certain spot under my ribs. It's kind of confusing for me. Either way, it doesn't last long and I haven't found any way of stopping it or preventing it.

The body is so strange.
