Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

Taking PPIs

My gastritis has flared up big time over the last three days. It hurts bad so Ive decided to take two Pantoprazole a day. I can take one in the morning and one in the evening. Do you think this is a good idea? Does it make a difference,something has to? Ive only been taking one a day as Im worried about side effects. I have to take more Tramadol too. I thought it was going as the pain was less and now its got really bad,I seem to be taking more meds. Does anyone else have to take extra meds? Has anyone else had it getting worse at times? I just wish this would go away for good.

Yes , my doctor upped my omeprazole in December . I now take 40 mg 2x a day . I was concerned about the extra meds too but could not stand the pain and the constant reflux anymore . I had a bit of a flare up this week but to be honest it's been a stressful few days . Stress gets me every time . Do I think the extra has helped ? Yes definitely . But when I'm extra stressed nothing really helps . If your doc says it's ok to up the meds I would try that for a while and see if that helps you.

Thanks pro yes Im going to take the two tablets a day. I think you don,t care in the end when you are in so much pain. I hate gastritis its such an awful illness to have. I hope it goes soon for all of us. Ive been looking on Yahoo answers about it. Its more or less the same struggle for everyone. I have been feeling quite stressed lately too it doesn,t help.

I'd gone on a second PPI per day in October, after a nasty flareup. It definitely helped (I'm also on Sucralfate). However, after awhile I noticed that my digestion seems to be somewhat inhibited - meaning it takes longer to digest and I sometimes feel full for much longer than I expect.

I've spoken to my gastro about this, and she insisted that I continue until I'm well past the gastritis flareup - which will be about 6 months total. It's been 5 months, and I feel past the gastritis but I'm pretty sure the 2nd PPI is still causing the other issues. It's done its job, and now I'm ready to step back to 1 per day.

Hi jjstark Im pleased that the extra PPI has worked for you. Im taking two but not always fitting them in at the same times. Did you take them at the same times everyday? Ive not seen a difference yet but Ive only been taking the extra for about 4 days. Ive still had some pain and reflux,hopefully it will get there. Im still struggling with the chest too with wheezing,tightness and discomfort. I just hope things settle down soon. Its been flaring up for a while now and Im so tired as I can,t sleep with it. I don,t blame you for cutting down to one as they are not good long term. What do you eat now? I bet they do stop things digesting as they are cutting the acid. We all need our normal stomachs back,sooner rather than later. Be careful though as you don,t want it to flare up again.
