Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

Does anyone ever have trouble swallowing something like cake? This just recently started for me. I ate a peanut butter on bread sandwich and when it hit bottom I had a terrible pain under my left ribs.... like it was having trouble going down. Then it happened again with cake. Is this part of the gastritis?

Yes it is new. I'm wondering if this could be esophageal spasms. I've had some experience with that. It doesn't take more than a minute after eating for it to hit me. And it stops pretty quickly. But I am having some lingering pain in the center of my chest.. just like the gastritis pain.

I've had issues swallowing off and on. It seemed to happen with things like bread. Also have that nagging left side pain when eating

Me too - on and off for 5 years. Especialy if I have swallowed too quickly and not chewed enough - it feels like is sticks and I have to stop eating straight away and wait for it to move down. Embarrassing if you are out with company and you have to stop and then your meal gets cold.

Thanks for the replies. They are reassuring. My doctor wants to see me after hearing about this new problem. I have to say, I have never had hunger pangs. I keep seeing posts concerning this problem and kind of wonder why I don't have this one. Not that I want it. Just curious.

Also, did your doctors run additional scopes when your swallowing problems started? I have a feeling I'm heading down that road.

littlemart.. it is probably inflammation of the esophagus but just get a scope and have the esophagus looked at it you haven't for a while.

So if it is inflammation what can we do? By the way.... this doesn't happen all the time. My last scope was over a year ago. So, not too long ago.

Omg yes anything like cake,bread type things they tend to get stuck and I struggle to swallow properly x

Get a scope done if you have swallowing problems. it is one of those symptoms you shouldnt ignore.

To eliminate the inflammation in the esophagus you have to get really serious with your diet and eat all that very plain stuff. prop yourself up at night as well. A lot of refluxing happens overnight.

Littlemart. I think you said you have MS. I wonder if your reflux has something to do with that or any of your other health issues. Your inflammation may be more difficult to control.

There might be a lot of reasons why you experienced the pain under your left rib. Yes, it might be gastritis or maybe an allergic reaction. It will be better for you to consult a doctor first so it will be treated properly.
