Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

HI there,
Does anyone else find themselves getting excited about special occasions and wanting so badly to be well on the day that the anxiety causes a reaction? I was catching up with an old school friend today and another friend from interstate tonight but worked myself into a lather and the pain hit 1am. I've had to cancel the afternoon catch up as I couldn't manage either the 1 hour drive or train trip to see my friend. I can at least stay home for the other but it is beyond demoralising to keep dealing with this after three years.
Does anyone have any coping mechanisms for such events? It could be birthdays or New Years etc.

I year you. Am so sorry you had to cancel with your friend. I've had many occasions when I've been extra careful praying that things don't act up (e.g. weekend in NY for bday celebration, kid's birthdays...one coming up in a couple weeks, special dinner last night, and another few celebrations coming up such as our anniversary family wedding). For me, it's nausea. Yesterday for example, my husband and I were being taken out to a really nice restaurant for joint bdays. I was nauseous yesterday and the day before...so I loaded up on my PPI, zantac, nausea pills and tums, and ate little in the day (which seems to help). I'm paying for it today with nausea but still managed to enjoy dinner (but also, had to be very careful what to order and skipped an appetizer while everyone else had). It really sucks doesn't it?

Sucks big time. I was able to enjoy dinner with my other friend as he came to me. I was going to make a prawn risotto but settled on pumpkin and broccoli after pain earlier in the day. It all went well.

Good to hear you could enjoy one of your dinners. I wonder if things will ever go back to normal. Or with each meal, it will have to be a decision of "do I want to pay for this meal afterwards" (and by pay, I don't mean money)...and even that works, if you're feeling "ok" to begin with.

My confidence was soaring about 12 months ago but my IBS won't give me a break. i have bad periods of eating and huge fears and then spells where I'm ok.
Eating at home is definitely the easier option but we can still get pain then.
In time it will get better and easier to manage and you will adjust to what I call the 'new normal'.

Hi I know how you feel as I have a lot of birthdays coming up in June. It is my sisters fiftieth do on 8 June along with mums birthday then I have other birthdays coming up after that where we may go for a meal. I have been stressing up about it and worrying that I won,t be able to eat anything or be too poorly to go. Ive been getting bad pain which has kept me awake at night. There seems to be many birthdays etc coming up in June and my sisters 21st wedding anniversary too so its hard. Ive had gastritis for almost 3 years but it just seems to get more unbearable. A friend of mine who had it said that he lived on porridge for a month but I don,t want to. The strange thing is he found that he could eat baked beans after this.

Best way out of this is to bring your own food and stick with it. Don't be tempted and try anything else on the table.

I don't get worked up about my food options its being ok on the day that causes the problem. I only put myself in situations where I know I can eat something. In the early days I would have done that though to remove excess stress. Good advice.
