Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
You are not alone as I too, suffer from constant nausea. Sometimes I'll have burning or a full tummy feeling, but the nausea is my main symptom. It's awful isn't it? For awhile, I was on tecta and I also took zantac and tums. My GI gave me prescription for odansetron, but I find it only really helps if the nausea is small. I have talked with my GP since, and we're trying a different PPI, prevacid. We even upped it to 2x a day and although it isn't gone, it's helping more. Perhaps see if you can try a different PPI. For me, I'm going to see how this goes, and then try another one.
I do hope you get some relief, as I know the nausea is awful...and hard to continue functioning.
As for your nausea, not sure what you are drinking but if you can add a little shake of ginger to it about every 4 hrs it may help.
I'm in year 3 now since my gastritis started, and I've got some thoughts for you. First, you're GI might have told you that it would clear up after a few months. That's sorta true. The suddenly went away part is you healing, but it's not permanent. I'm starting to think I will always have it. I've gone through several cycles and know my triggers pretty well at this point. I control the nausea by diet, and stick with the BRAT diet as close as possible (Bananas, rice, applesauce, toast). Once a day I add some fish or chicken in some combination. I'm actually in it now, it's been a week, and my nausea's under control. The night burn isn't, so sleep is touch and go.
However, I did maintain before this for almost a year without problems, so much so that I thought I was cured. Two months of coffee, beer, Mexican, and everything else I shouldn't have been ingesting, plus a lapse in my exercising caught up with me. Still, it's not quite as bad as before.
I do find exercise helps, but moderate. For me, stress and heat combined with bad diet sets me off.
Hang in there. It's the worst sickness, because you're not fully incapacitated, you just feel crappy, and it takes forever to let it run it's course. Stay true to eating right, and it goes away faster (weeks instead of months).
Thanks for your reply. I haven't actually seen a GI only my general doctor. Wasnt given any guidance as to what caused it or what to eat etc. Just given omeprazole. Got an appointment with a different doctor tomorrow so hopefully will get some answers. You are right when you say you just feel crappy.
Fortunately i don't have any problems at night so i can sleep. Will give the BRAT diet a go
Last night I got great sleep! The diet really turned it around fast. I feel pretty close to normal, I even ate some turkey shepherd's pie - green beans, mashed potatoes, ground turkey, etc. No heartburn, and no dizziness.
I wanted to also share that the omeprazole made me nauseous as well in higher doses. I was supposed to take 80mg/day, but I cut it down to 40mg. Worked better, less nausea.
I really think diet is the key, though.
Had my appointment with my gp yesterday. He has taken me off omeprazole and put me on ranitidine twice a day. He said these tablets contain histermine (not sure if i have spelt it correctly) which is good for nausea. I asked him about probiitics and he said they wouldn't do any harm so going to give them a try.
Glad to hear that you had a good night's sleep. I hope it continues for you
Let us know how the ranitidine works for you. Question as I've seen others mention it on here...is that by prescription, or do you just take OTC zantac? I'm finding that the prevacid is helping with the nausea (I still get bouts, but it's not constnat)
i started taking it last night. Don't know if its a coincidence but i havent felt sick today and have eaten like a horse.
The ranitidine is by prescription. i went to see a different GP yesterday and he prescribed this. He said it contains histimine which is good for nausea,
I will keep you updated
steve, we also have zantac 75 & 150 in Canada...which is why I was curious if it's the same as the OTC
