Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
Good Luck,
Your nausea symptom is the same as mine. I was diagnosed with mild chronic gastritis. My gastro does admit that nausea is one of the symptom of gastritis. Besides nausea, I have has episodes of bloating and feeling of indigestion too. and some stomach burning.
But whether it is gastritis or dyspepsia, the issue now is to allow your stomach to heal.
you should stop all alcohol.
You should also add a PPI to your medication.
Adjust your diet : it is a major contributor to your success in battling this.
I have cut out chilli, curry, spices, too oily stuff, Italian food (which I loved), avoided chocolates, coffee, tea, bubbly drinks, alcohol, critus fruits etc.
It took me a long time to accept this change - emotionally- as I really love all these food. But I want to live well and I want to heal. That is my motivation.
best of luck!
You may still be at a stage where you can avoid being hooked to harmful pharmaceuticals, and PepZin GI alone can pull you out of this situation.
If you have money, I'd recommend also buying Ulcetrol and Gastromend HP. They're increasingly powerful in effect, but both of them have some antibacterial properties and thus require that you wait an hour after taking them before starting to eat, and take probiotics with the food.
Also consider using digestive enzymes and taking them right before food. I use Source Naturals brand and take 6 before every meal. They will make it easier for your stomach to process food.
However, at the bare minimum, just get PepZin GI.
Now. Before things get worse.
Later on when your stomach is better, you'll be able to consume those things in moderate quantities, but you may need to take PepZin GI beforehand for protection. It has both a protective effect on stomach lining, and helps it recover fast.
I agree, try and nip it in the bud now!!! That is the key to preventing it from becoming chronic.
Changing your diet so much is hard mentally but you need to do it to be successful. That can take a while to accept.
The GERD and Heartburn area also has alot of diet ideas in some of the older threads. Many people on that site also have stomach issues.
I stick to potaotes, chicken and oatmeal for heartburn and the meals are really small which applies to gastritis as well. Stick to the GERD/Gastritis rules and you will recover quickly!
Good Luck
I tried freshly squeezing it myself and drinking, but at the earlier stages it irritated my stomach too much. Now I might give it another shot, thanks.
Thank you for taking the time to read my post and replying. This past week I have been doing significantly better since I started the PPI the gastro-doc prescribed. It took 4-5 days to kick in but I have made big improvements in a short time, I have my appetite back and my nausea is a lot milder and easier to manage.
I seem to be on the road to recovery I just wish the doctor gave me this 2 months ago :S would have saved me a lot of suffering. I should also add that I adjusted my diet almost immediately upon feeling unwell - NO alcohol, fast food, coffee, tea, citrus fruits/juices etc. I think this aided my healing but I certainly don't get the same reactions I have read some people have from eating certain foods. The only foods/drinks I noticed had a direct affect were alcohol and coffee.
I hope everybody on here makes a full recovery and thank you for the advice. =)
P.S. Shihonage - I will definitely try Pepzin GI I have read a lot of good reviews about it and the price seems reasonable.
I was diagnosed with moderate chronic gastritis about a year ago but have had it two years.
One of the major things my naturopath and I work with is food intolerances. You might think about starting a food diary. Something simple, just a note pad you can stick in your pocket so you can jot down the foods you eat and if you have pain afterward. There may even be an android diary that might do. You may see a pattern you aren't aware of, and it may surprise you what it is. It may not cure you to avoid those foods but it can help your pain.
Wishing you well and hoping you find answers.
Question: are you stressed/anxious at the moment?
If you are, there's a good chance that is the cause of your nausea, not 'gastritis' which as you say many people have.
I am going to do a separate post on this, but I have suffered nausea for ages, and have been prescribed Pregabalin (Lyrica) - 75mg twice a day
Which has REALLY helped. It's a newish drug that was originally designed for epilepsy but is also now on-label for neuropathic pain and for anxiety.
It might be worth considering if you are running out of ideas. I am miles better on it, have recovered my appetite, and the nausea is much reduced.
cheers,
WT
@webtoy: When I first had this problem I am convinced I wasn't stressed or depressed. In fact I was having some of the best moments of my life. Now however this problem has made me very anxious and stressed and made me reconsider if anxiety is also causing this problem. I do have a lot of potential stress factors: I am studying in a foreign country, I don't speak the language, I am afraid this 'gastritis' will prevent me from completing my projects and exams, I have no social life practically since this whole thing started and finally I am away from my partner and all my family which I guess can be stressful.
I am 5-6 weeks into my empiric PPI treatment and feel like I have made no improvement so I will go back to the GI here next week or the week after and speak with him about this. He also suggested it could be related to all the above mentioned factors but I strongly denied it at the time. But now i certainly do have bouts of anxiety and depression but they are a result of this 'gastritis', the constant feeling of nausea makes you feel it will never end and you could be like this forever.
@gramybear: I previously thought of this but I don't have any hearing problems or pains and I don't have any dizziness so that was why I originally excluded that. It feels like a very physical problem coming from my stomach but as you said nausea is the result of many possible factors.
I believed I had gastritis for ages, but had an endoscopy #2 about 6 months after the first, and I was clear.
This led my GI to conclude it was stress/anxiety, and referred me to a psy-doc. He prescribed the pregabalin (on top of an existing AD, mirtazapine).
I suffered for ages but the Preg (2x75mg per day, FYI) is making me feel miles better, with recovered appetite, and some recovered weight (which is fine - I lost about 20% of body weight with this). My diet is back to normal too - I can even drink booze! And back on tomatoes, coffee etc etc. (will say this quietly around here...!)
Living in another country etc. can be inherently stressful I would have thought.
So talk to your GI - he may be able to prescribe Preg himself, or may want to refer you out. But given your symptoms (and remember, if it was gastritis you would probably have pain too, which I never had), I would have thought it was likely.
The only thing is its expensive (still on patent) so if you're in the US, this may be an issue - here in the UK with our NHS, luckily not so.
Other therapy (CBT, hypnotherapy) might be useful too.
If you are truly out of ideas, this route may well be worth considering.
Whatever you do, let us know how you get on
Good luck,
WT
I have had this hell called gastritis for 11 months now and I have gotten a lot better. I am going outside now and recently even built a new chicken coop and was shingling the roof today. though i was sick all day so far because i did a bit of weight lifting yesterday, boy was that a mistake.
For me its like if i make any changes to my diet what so ever i get sick. even if i eat something at a different time, for example if i eat eggs in the evening instead of the morning.
my current diet is as follows:
9:30 am - 2 eggs (microwaved) and some crackers (unsalted)
12:00 pm - 2 eggs (microwaved) and some crackers (unsalted)
2:30 pm - Plain oatmeal made with water
5:00 pm - Plain oatmeal made with water
7:30 pm - 1 banana with half a package of crackers
10:00 pm - 1 banana with half a package of crackers
two days ago i had some chicken breast and a few hours later i was totally sick. the weird part though is that months ago chicken breast was part of my regular, every day diet and it didn't make me sick at all
I'm still pretty sick but there is hope! I have gotten a lot better. I was crazy sick before, was always dizzy and couldn't even go on the computer or read a book, I felt constantly weak and tired and many many more symptoms.
for medicine i take a ppi and thats all. nexium. i also use aloe vera juice whenever i can and it seems to help. I took dgl for a while but it didnt seem to do anything so i stopped using it.
anyways sorry for the long post hope some of this helps you
