Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

Rib pain?

Another question. Why do we all seem to get this miserable pain around our ribs? What causes that? How does gastritis fit in with rib pain?

I made a terrible mistake yesterday at the grocery store. Tried to pick up a box of kitty litter which was way too heavy for me and slammed it into my lower ribs when I tried to get it in the cart. Ouch! I don't think I did much damage. I've had torn cartilage in my ribs before and it was a killer. But I'm not comfortable and the pain is bouncing around from one side to the other and in my back. Referred pain? Anyway, that's not really part of my question. Just a little story for you.

Having MS I get something called the MS HUG which is a tightening around the rib cage and back. This is similar. But I just don't know where the pain comes from with gastritis.

Good question. I get this often and I've never figured it out. A burning sensation in the ribs. It will last for days then suddenly disappear.

That rotten kitty litter is heavy isn't it. They have that lighter stuff now but I look for the cheapest kind that still does the trick. I mean, it's kitty litter, and costs way too much anyway for what it does. But if you have cats you gotta have it around and you gotta have it relatively clean or they go on the rug or the bed or where ever they deem appropriate. Lousy cats. They seem to deal with gastritis pretty well don't they. They just blah on the floor regularly and they're good.

My problem with the litter was that I am short and very thin and just couldn't haul the box over the side of the shopping cart. It kind of kicked back and got me in the lower ribs. I know this will take a long time to heal. Probably just bruised myself inside.

But then there is the ever present symptom of ribs hurting FROM the gastritis.

Back to the rib pain. I've been getting a painful squeezing under one side or the other randomly.

My problem is that I have MS and we can get something called the MS HUG which is a squeezing around the ribs and back. So now I'm not sure which thing is causing this right now.

Anyone have any more on this?

I get this a lot but only on my left hand side, I think it's definitely from my stomach because when I have heartburn it goes away, but it feels like someone is jabbing a knife under my rib cage on the left hand side. I found diet triggers this a lot too, if I eat too much fibre it seems to get worse and carrots for some reason make it really bad. Still not really sure what it is, sometimes I move around a bit and burp and it eases but other times when I eat something it helps too. Seems really bad when I have an empty stomach and I just drink some water or something, then it really really hurts.

i get this on the right side just under the ribs. i have been to the GP who has said it is costochondritis.
