Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

I know this question has been asked a thousand times so I apologize for the redundancy.
I picked up my first prescription of Sucralfate today and I wanted your input.
Do you feel like this med has helped you? How?
Are their any side effects? When do you take it?

I'm taking it. I think it really helps to coat your stomach. You need to follow the directions carefully on how to take it. I take 4 a day.

It might give you some extra unwanted gas. I take so many other stomach meds it's hard to differentiate. Other than that, I don't have any bad side effects.

Hi Jim: I take it along with slippery elm, DGL licorice, chamomile tea, etc. so to save money, I only took it (to start) twice a day--one in the morning and one before bedtime. I now take it only before bedtime, since I'm much better.

I believe it does coat the stomach well. My GP asked me what I take for the gastritis and he said he has been impressed at the way Carafate works.

I found no side effects, personally, but might want to check with you GI doc.

So do you think that Sucralfate is better than taking Gaviscon,an antacid? I have tried taking Sucralfate sometimes and Gaviswcon at least twice a day. I find that the symptoms mostly remain. Im now not sure what is best for the acid. I usually take the Gaviscon before bed as I can,t take both together. Ive found though that if my symptoms are bad I wait an hour or so then take the Sucralfate too. I am beginning to think that my hiatus hernia is to blame a lot for my pain. My husband says that you don,t get pain with a hiatus hernia so I don,t know.

I don't have the same conditions you do, so, for what it's worth: I've always been leery of antacids of any type--but maybe that's just me. I've had good success with Carafate (sucralfate), personally.

Sorry, I don't know much about a hiatal hernia, so I'm no help there.

Have you Googled something like 'self help hiatal hernia'? Sometimes there are tips that might make a difference, or suggestions regarding being treated by your doctor.
