Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
I have had gastritis for 9 months. At first I took dexilant, the first month it did not work but as soon as I started a low fat, low acid, low salt diet avoiding anything irritating I started feeling better. After another month on dexilant my stomach felt really good, I was sleeping again, I had my life back, it was great but I was stressed to take a PPI so I stopped cold turkey. Big mistake, the following days I had a lot of pain.
So I experimented with DGL licorice, slippery elm, evamore water, and Pepzin GI in addition to the diet. They were all useful. I took those supplements for 3 months and started feeling very slowly better. It was so slow that at times I was wondering if I was really improving but looking backward I had been improving.
After three months I felt good enough that I thought I was cured and I stopped everything. I felt that my stomach was sensitive for a few weeks but did not really hurt. And then I got invited to a big dinner and ate every food that is not recommended. The pain came back very strongly. I could not sleep anymore, I felt miserable. So I started again pepzin GI, DGL licorice, the strict diet. We are now two weeks later. After two weeks on DGL licorice, one week on pepzin GI, the pain is better but it is still there. I have a constant sore throat too and I sleeping more or less well. I am back on a strict diet. I am getting tired of this disease and my setback depresses me. I wonder if I should just be patient and keep taking the natural supplements, or take the dexilant again for let's say two months. This time I would get off it progressively.
I would like to add that I would like to try to get pregnant as soon as possible (because of another condition, it is unlikely to work quickly so I would like to get started). It is out of the question while taking the PPI but I thought the other supplements look relatively safe. On the other hand, I am so tired to have that constant sore throat and light stomach pain, the bad sleep. I am very tempted to take the dexilant again. Even if it delays when I can try to get pregnant and even though I am anxious about taking it, if it can help me heal faster, it is worth it. But I worry that when I will stop the dexilant, even if I stop slowly, I am going to hurt my stomach because of the rebound effect and will be back at the beginning. Would you have any advice to help me make a decision?
