Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
Thank you for this group ...it's a God send!!!!
This is my first post. please forgive me for long story but I am in great need.
5 months ago i went to dr after getting pains in stomach on back of taking ibuprofen. Dr also tested for h pylori which also proved positive. I still believe to this day that Antibiotics caused more damage than before treatment. after endoscopy I was diagnosed with (so called) mild gastritis in the mid and lower section of stomach. This issue resulted in nearly 2 stone weight loss, several months off work, depression, massively restricted diet.
After triple therapy I have been taking 20mg omeprazole in the day and another 20mg in the evening. Last month I had no flare ups whatsoever. Dr reduced dosage and told me to take 20mg once a day only. Now this is where it gets interesting folks... Your attention and input is fully needed....
Monday - 20mg - felt fine. Tuesday -20mg - felt fine. Wednesday - 20mg- stomach felt very flat/deflated. No acid issues but started to feel nauseous at odd times in the day/night. I also started taking manuka honey 15+ and dgl. For your information I do not suffer from acid reflux.
I really don't like the idea of being on PPI and after reading many articles and speaking to people who also hate PPI I did the following ( for my sins):
Thursday - no PPI. Only dgl and manuka honey. No real pain in stomach. Slight discomfort but put this down to withdrawal symptoms.
Friday - no PPI. Dgl and manuka honey. Slight burning at top end of stomach after eating food.
Saturday - no PPI. Dgl and manuka honey. No burning. Nausea all day!!!! Stomach was killing me like I have never felt before. Stomach felt very flat/empty all the time. I felt pain in parts of my stomach that I have never felt - when I put my hands on these parts of my stomach it was very tender to touch and wanted to be sick. I never felt this prior to triple therapy and I never felt nauseous before therapy. I was nauseous throughout Saturday night. No sleep.
Sunday - could not bare it any longer. With much resistance I gave in and failed - I took 20mg PPI at 12pm. Also took dgl and manuka honey in the day
Monday - 20mg PPI. Extreme nausea. Certain parts of stomach still tender to touch,Particularly after I had eaten any food. Dgl and manuka honey helped ease the pain somewhat. Nausea throughout the night.got little sleep.
Tuesday - 20mg PPI. Dgl and manuka honey. Nausea still present but slightly less than previous day's. could no longer feel tender areas of stomach.maybe PPI is masking it?
Today -20mg PPI. Dgl and manuka honey. Nausea present throughout the day. Comes and goes sporadically brought on particularly after food. Could no longer feel the troublesome/tender part of stomach. Stomach felt deflated in late afternoon.
Spoke to Dr today as in agony with Nausea. He was not best pleased that I tried to stop all PPI on Thursday. I asked whether I should return to taking PPI in the evening as well as the daytime. He decided against this. He said my nausea symptoms were common and could go on for several weeks before the acid production levels return to normal flow. He said that in extreme cases I could take another PPI but that I should refrain from it. He told me that it should settle in in a few weeks.
I know that I was too eager to get off PPI but I just wanted to return to normal. But this experience has been an eye opener for me.
So here are the questions
Has the PPI been working or masking my gastritis?
Is what the Dr saying true?- these are common symptoms?
Why could I feel certain parts of stomach that was so sensitive to touch and made me feel sick that was not present before triple therapy?
Could this mean that my stomach lining has not completely healed and that I should be taking evening pill as well. At least then I could eat food - albeit restricted diet?
Are PPI only masking the problem?
I sometimes feel that little has changed in terms of healing the stomach lining and that I still have gastritis. Could this be the case?
The fact is I felt brilliant for a month only to find that when stopped PPI my stomach was and still is in great pain. It's very sensitive and I feel nauseous. This can't be right after 1.5 weeks of reducing PPI.
I was speaking to a friend of mine who had been diagnosed with erosive gastritis and when he came off PPI he did not feel nauseous or experience these withdrawal symptoms.
Any help and advice is much appreciated. Sorry for long story.
Peace .

I am suffering from the inability to cope with ordinary every day things. From my housework to watching tv or reading a book. I get palpatations, nervousness, at the moment my heart is palpatating and all I am doing is typing this. I am so scared its silly, I just want to stay in bed and just get up for meals and coffee. Not that that is going to happen. At the moment I have my daughter...
I have found the PPI I take to be helpful with my gastritis.I take protonix, theres a generic name as well(pantoprazole) I think.this one works best for me.some of the others caused some pain.Ive been on it for at least 10 years.I know this is bad,but when i try to stop it my symptoms return with a vengence.
Why do you take the honey? is it a treatment for gastritis?
I see you had H pylori could it be that was never fully resolved? I never tested positive for that so dont know how much of that might be still causing your symptoms?
Ive heard PPI's can be difficult to come off of.Nausea is not really my symptoms.Mine is more pain severe bloating....
I hope you can find some aswers to your problem here....take care
Manuka honey is considered good for stomach as it kills bacteria and protects stomach lining.
Please read this if nothing is helping u out ...I am from India and you must be knowing about "Ayurveda" which is an ancient method of treating diseases by natural ways.I have long suffered from various problems like stomach ache, gas, acidity and the list goes on...took several medicines visited a lot of doctors but nothing helped....I started loosing weight and I ate very less....became weak and depressed...then a person(would call him an angel) told me about "navel displacement" which is referred to as "Dharan Uttarna" in Hindi language. After doing simple exercises empty stomach in the morning and thereby eating jaggery cured me within 5 days from all my stomach ailments. If u search the internet about it u can find a great deal of information and the exercise details(yoga) to be done to cure it.
