Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
Back with an update but first a recap.
I came down with gastritis after taking some heavy doses of ibuprofin over a 5 month period for a broken leg. Thinking back though, I had some stomach rumblings right before the leg broke though so probably had been living with a mild condition for some time.
A little nausea, some stomach burning, complete loss of appetite, wicked constipation, pains, and of course, a distended belly.
So the doc put me on omeprazole (twice a day) and I really didn't notice any great benefit other then the acid reflux I was getting calmed down a bit. Then I started on pepzin gi (from endurance products in Tigard OR). Within a week I was feeling pretty good, I was hungry for real food, and I was "regular".
I thought I was pretty much healed so when I ran out of the pepzin gi, I didn;t re-order. Within 3 days I was back to square one even though I was taking the omeprazole.
So I ordered another brand of pepzin gi that also contained mastic gum and some other natural stuff. Again, within a few days I was back to about 80% normal.
Gave it another 30 days and all went pretty well. Ran out of pepzin gi, back to square one.
So now I'm back on the pepzin gi and I quit taking the omeprazole a few days ago to see if that impacts how I feel. I am seeing improvement once again with the pepzin gi so that's good but I think it may be to early to tell if I am ready to come off the omeprazole.
So the moral of the story, for me anyway, is to stay on the pepzin gi and stop eating like I'm healed. Every time the pepzin gi kicked in I went back to my old eating habits which are often not very stomach friendly.
If you haven't given pepzin gi a shot, I would. It blows me away how much better I feel when taking it regularly. I purchased my current bottle at Amazon.com for around $15 for 60 day supply.

@nicki - no idea nicki but it's just a natural product purchased over the counter. I would ask your doc and then give it a go if it's ok with them.

Although even though they are chewable, I swallow them with water like a normal pill. I chewed one the first time I took it and felt like more of it ended up stuck in my teeth than actually went into my stomach.
Can't go wrong with either of them though.
I'm on the Doctor's Best brand right now and it's working great.
