Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

Pain around ribs and thru back

I know a lot of us get this awful pain under our ribs that seems to radiate to our backs. What I want to know is how can you tell this is coming from the gastritis and NOT Pancreatitis? The symptoms are somewhat the same. I'm not looking for trouble, but today has been a bad one with burning pain in my back and lots of esophageal type spasms. Seems like every little bite I put in my mouth makes me feel either sick or in pain. So, I'm just not eating today.

I'm having sudden pain right at the bottom of my esophagus. Just lasts a few seconds but it keeps coming back. Any ideas??

Oh dear Im so sorry to hear you are not feeling well.Myself Ive been felling off recently,lots of stress and wham every symptom is back my dry eyes, pressure in the head,tight throat and the heavy feeling inside the stomach.Ive been trying to calm myself down as much as I can.I actually noticed that my symptoms flared up again after a conversation with a person that ended in a disagreement.Since that day Ive been getting progressively worse but tonight Im going to take a notebook and write down all my negative thoughts and what I can do about each of them.Thats my therapy.As for the pain I believe its gastritis.Pancreatis is supposed to be excrutiating pain from what people describe it.Good luck and God bless you.

So are there days when just a bite will cause that tight, squeezing pain under the ribs or diaphragm? I was doing so much better.. eating etc... gaining weight. Then the last few days the pain started again.

I suppose if it was pancreatitis the pain would be constant. This lets up.. only lasts a few minutes. But I ate less than a forkful of eggs (usually a safe food for me) and BAM. Pain under the ribs. Feeling a little nauseaus too. Thanks again.

Yes!Im experiencing the exact same symptoms right now.I wake up in the morning with the tight feeling and slight nausea.This morning was worse than usual.I had eggs for dinner last night:)Just soft boiled eggs and gf toast.I really don't know what to eat anymore.I cant keep loosing weight because I have anemia from my monthly blood loss.Its hard to figure things out right now:(

Littlemart i get the same pain on my left side, though mine doesnt radiate to the back. It doesnt feel like its my stomach which really worries me at times.

The only way to know whether its gastritis or pancreatitis really is CT scan so they can see the pancreas. I had one and everything was normal. Pancreatic cancer has other symptoms like jaundice though, and pancreatitis is quite rare on its own, it is usually caused by another major illness which you would hve symptoms of.
