Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
This sounds a lot like me at the beginning of my gastritis journey...I had appitite lose and even now..8 months later feel very tired. Is pepcid a h2 blocker medication??.. we don't have it here in the UK...but if it is then sounds right..I have been on meds about 10 weeks now and although a lot better I am not healed...it depends on the individual and the extent of the inflammation...a endoscopy is the only real way of telling...6-8 weeks might cure it...mine was mild but I still need a few more weeks on meds. Did your GP advise on diet..no spicy/hot/acidic foods...no alchohol?? maybe worth having a look through the forum for diet advise as it's vital in curing gastritis. Keep us updated...we are all here to help..I have found some amazin help from people on here over the last few weeks. Good healing :)
Boo bear, yes ive been very careful with what I eat but didnt know eggs wouldnt go over well. Yes pepcid is h2 blocker. Also taking vitamins, aloe Vera, and probiotix.
Kimghds, yes I have to keep taking deep breaths when I get little burns throughout the day through my pepcid. Its just frustrating to think ill have to live this way for so long before healing. What does proposed do differently than pepcid? Is it an h2 blocker as well?
I'm about a week in to treatment. I definitely feel better than day one but still at times feel a random burning sensation in my stomach. The worst thing I feel is fatigue. Its really hard to get through a work day or walk around too much without getting lightheaded. Ive noticed if I really follow my diet (no spicy, no caffeine, no coffee, no carbonation, no acidic foods) the days are better than if I have some dairy or spice. Right now the pain is a 1-2 but when I went into ER it got to a 7. They have me on Pepcid which reduces stomach acid so I can heal.
As far as weight loss I'm 7 months into dealing with gastritis and still losing weight. I am not overweight so I'm not losing it quickly but still see the scale going down over time. I think I've lost 10lbs in the last 7 months which is a lot when you're 5'1"! Just try to eat small meals frequently and snacks even if you're not very hungry. The meds also seem to take away my appetite. I try to think of it as a nice consolation prize for having to deal with the hell that is gastritis.
Im on ranitidine - also an h2 blocker and I too feel it makes me tired. However it is the only med that has made my stomach feel better. Protonix didn't work for me.
I have had stomach pain everyday of the last 4 years except when they finally diagnosed me with chronic gastritis caused by H/pylori in January this year & I went on the triple therapy.
I believe I still have the pesky little bug, because a week after therapy the pain was back & doctors believe the test was correct.
I have had prior to all this, the PPIs, nausea tablets, Zantac & along with some of the side effects.
I had a gastroscopy at the beginning which they thought I had IBS & stomach inflammation and one in January when I had to see a surgeon after a breast cancer scare and I was really sick after the anaesthetic.
That gastroscopy came back with chronic gastritis & H/Pylori
I Am still suffering, but now I am vitamin deficient and at the end of my endurance.
I have never suffered from anxiety or been a depressed person, in fact I was a health coach & personal trainer before this & it's only because of my stomach issues that I am no longer able to work in that profession. each day is getting harder, each doctors visit turns into an emotional outpouring of misery, and then going home with another script.
I used to have to workout hard & eat correctly to maintain a healthy body & BMI (with healthy diet & exercise I would lose weight easily, but gain it quickly if I slipped up) even this gastritis has dealt me a hard blow, some lose weight with gastritis, but not me. I have gained 12 kilos & blown up like a dead animal that has died in the sun. And I just can't get rid of it. For one I don't have the energy to workout hard & if I over do it, I get sick.
Back to see a gastro specialist soon, so hopefully this time & this visit will have me better.
Long for a day without pain
