Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
I think it all depends on what stage your gastritis is at. when I first had gastritis over 7 months ago I could hardly eat anything, then was caerful eating very bland foods such as chicken and mostly veggies. I cut out all dairy and the usual spicy/acidic stuff. Later on though I bought a slow cooker and it's been amazing! I cooked lots of beef stews making sure the meat was very very tender but did not put anything in with it except veggies(no onion) and just water no salty stock cubes etc. Cooked on slow for about 7-8 hours. I cooked chicken breasts that way also which were very tender and easy to digest but full of flavour and goodness. also added potatos in with the meat. You might be alright adding a few herbs but just experiment slowly. I ate lots of baked and steamed fish and also roasted parsnips/potatoes/aubergine/courgette/sweet potato/pumkin all cut into cubes and with a dash of olive oil. :)
I second what Boobear said. The food has to be soft and easy to digest in addition to avoiding the irritants ( the usual tea, coffee, spices, tomatoes, onions, etc). For instance, at the beginning I kept trying chicken breast b/c it's fatless, but it was so hard ( ESP. when reheated), I couldn't digest it. Skinless chicken legs were better. I can't eat quinoa b/c it's rough. I make mushy jasmine rice and am ok with it. I can't eat wild salmon since it's tough but fattier and softer farm raised salmon (boiled) is ok. I eat white bread but whole wheat bread ( though healthier)killed me. So your foods have to be very very soft and you need to chew them a lot ( also to start kick starting producing enzymes). I only it kale, sweet potatoes and zucchini for veggies - too much fiber anything is bad. Absolutely no broccoli for me. No red meat either.
So make sure everything is soft, avoid the big no's ( look up acid reflux diet online ) and go with what YOU are able to tolerate. There are weird things like I cannot eat boiled eggs, but I can eat scrambled ones! No one can tell you that, you experiment for yourself.
Best wishes, Asli
