Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

Hi, so, i was wondering if i could possibly get some help. I've just turned 27 and when i was 20 was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease, leaning towards lupus. I always had stomach problems but it got progressively worse. I also suffered from bulimia. I was eating, then worrying about my stomach and throwing up and i was on antibiotics continuously from age 15 to 19 for my skin and about 4 times a year after that due to sinus infections(if i left, they'd get so bad they'd turn into several infections)
I cannot eat fruit, anything like palm fruit oil, coconut oil, fructose. I cannot eat a lot of veg, onions, garlic. I have to avoid inflammatory foods like eggs, nuts, gluten, dairy(also because of stomach) and i'm allergic to soy. It's basically a fodmap diet.
For the past 3 or so years i get a lot of burping, even just after drinking water. I'll have foods come back up, like a froth, i'll regurgitate after certain types of foods. For instance, i wouldn't dare touch ice cream and cereal is the same, with lactofree milk, it'll keep coming back up.
I had a gastroscopy done a few years back that showed inflammation of the stomach lining(gastritis) but it never went in my notes(luckily i was given the examination results sheet and took photocopies)...i was on omeprazole for this after it was performed but i never had any relief. I then went back to my doctor about a year ago to ask for another dose of that or something similar and he refused.
I've had several tests, i had a barium follow through and a glycocholic breath test and both came back negative. I only noticed, when having a physical examination during my barium follow through that there felt like a lump on my stomach(right side) just up and to the left a little from my hip but the doctor didn't say anything, it's painful when touched and i'll flinch. The doctors also noted that the liquid went through my very quickly in comparison with other people, as in two hours quicker but again, nothing was ever said about that.
Basically, i wondered if gastritis causes this fructose issue? I will have gurgling later on in my stomach, the lower part and the feeling of nervousness, like butterflies in the stomach, then pain then diarrhea. Only when i eat these types of products. I also get bad bloating that usually lasts days and horrible fluid retention on my legs, hips, face and my abdomen. The burping is also ridiculous, it feels constant sometimes. I don't tend to get acid reflux, it's only if i have chocolate usually.
I just wanted to ask if anyone gets similar problems, as in, does gastritis cause this fructose malabsorption, flatulance, bloating, diarrhea etc?
I wondered what the best/worst foods to eat are from your own personal experience?
What the best medication is?
If there are any other tests?
Does gastritis heal up or will you always have problems?
My mum now has atrophic gastritis and pernicious anemia and she isn't even half as bad as me, she can eat quite a lot without too many problems so this is why im worried and confused.
Sorry for all of this info, i tried to cut it to the most important things. I'm just having a hard time with all of this, i've lost my relationship, it's screwed up my life, i can't do the job i want, i can't travel when i want and i never have enough energy so i'm just looking for some answers before i see my rheumatologist again..i don't think my gastroentarologist is going to help me anymore, he dismissed my symptoms as just being part of me, that everyone has a different face so we all have different stomachs, some people can't eat what others can but i really cannot eat a lot and on top of that, i have to watch the inflammatory foods as it triggers my autoimmune disease and i feel horrific until i stop eating them...so i don't know what to do now..i feel like they just want to blame it on IBS and anxiety..
Thank you
Sorry to hear what you've been going through, that sounds like hell!
Have you tried Nexium(ranitidine)? It seems to have really helped me. For me, avoiding alcohol, acidic, fried food and stress are the things that's helped along side of Nexium.
Do you constantly worry? My pains would be worse when I worried I had something worse, like cancer or some serious fatal disease. I think stress and anxiety really contribute to worsening gastritis and preventing healing. I seriously doubt we will have it our whole life, it will heal.
As far as your symptoms, I only had bloating if I drank alcohol (next day) , I have no diarrhea, just pains in my ribs, under ribs (upper left and right quadrants) in my lower sides, the pains radiate to my back. I also get chest pains and heartburn if I eat something non gastro friendly. Been to cardiologist and everything is good, he agreed that chest pains were from the gastro stuff. Have you tried a different doctor?
