Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
What about those creams that you can rub on the joints, that are supposed to be anti-inflammatories? Wonder if they really help? I would assume that they would be safe for the stomach
I agree with what everyone has said about the NSAIDS.
NSAIDS are best avoided with any 'stomach acid' issues.
NSAIDs work by inhibiting two enzymes, substances that cause chemical changes in the body, called COX-1 and COX-2. Both enzymes produce prostaglandinschemicals produced in the body's cellsthat promote pain, inflammation, and fever.
However, unlike COX-2, COX-1 produces another type of prostaglandin that protects the stomach lining from stomach acid and helps control bleeding. By inhibiting COX-1, NSAIDs increase the risk of a peptic ulcer developing and bleeding. Therefore you would probably be better with a mild opiate based pain killer and paracetamol and stay well clear of NSAIDS.
I am at my wits end.....just feel ill every day with abdo pain and nausea. Have had to stop Omeprazole due to severe headaches and now finding ranitidine not helping pain. This has ruined my life socially and woek-wise for last 18 months. My GP has just agreed I need an endoscopy. He thinks its gastritis or ? ulcer but I am negative to Helibacter Pylori. I am considering having the helibacter pylori treatment anyway (if gp agrees) just in case I had a false negative test. Although I do get a bit stressed out I basically eat healthily, dont smoke and don't drink much so cant understand why stomach has suddenly let me down like this!! I am going to try lansoprazole next because apparently it doesnt cause the headaches.
Annika, I am sorry you're feeling so awful. I, and a lot of us on here can relate. I have nausea everyday with stomach pains yesterday too. I feel like I just keep upping the meds, which helps for a bit but then it gets bad again. I totally agree as it changes things socially....not so easy to just go to someone's house and hang out (as it usually involves a meal) or meeting at a restaurant, and of course continuing on with work as normal. It sounds like a good idea to get the endoscopy done (am surprised you've been suffering for 18 months without getting one yet). I've just switched to prevacid...hope it helps you too.
