Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

I get a burning TIGHTNESS in the center of my chest. Feels like i'm having a heart attack. I take 2-4 soft chewable Tums and it goes away.

Question: Is Prilosec better? Pepcid?

I'm 77, female, non-smoker and eat healthy. Vegetarian. No spicey or fried foods.

It sounds a bit more like heartburn. You are lucky a few tums work. Even a healthy diet can give you symptoms. A food journal can help you figure out your trigger.
I would take pepcid or the new zantaz over a ppi like prilosec but if tums work stick to that and figure out what in your diet causes the symptoms.
