Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
It's been 9 months for me. I'm improving, but it's very slow progress. Going to try a new diet of just spinach, carrots, broccoli, skinless potatoes, gluten free animal cookies (need some sugar to keep my head on straight) gluten free oatmeal with cinnamon (cinnamon is good for ulcers which is basically what I have, erosive gastritis aka tiny ulcers in the stomach lining) camomile tea and lots of alkaline water. Currently, I'm taking 40mg of protonix 2x a day. Was taking carafate but found out it was triggering symptoms. Weird right? I found that wearing a heating pad greatly reduces the burning pain. Oddly enough, I don't get any symptoms while I sleep...zero.
So, I guess I'll see how these diet goes. See if you can tolerate some lean protein, Protein is needed to repair damaged tissue. Me personally, I can't handle meat. Causes too much burning. So the little bit of protein I get comes from vegetables. Bone broth is something else you could consider.
Good luck!
I've only had this for a month and feel desperate.I'm in awe of all you people suffering for such a long time, and a little scared I'll never get rid of this.Like you I've got a gastroscopy coming up and I'm anxious. I also feel that the pp I I'm on is not helping.Guess we've just got to hang on,but it's hard good luck.xx
Learn from our mistakes. Don't listen to the Internet when it comes to treatment. Do what works for you. IMO, all these supplements you'll read about online like DGL, zinc carnosine, pine nut oil, slippery elm, l-glutamine, probiotics, digestive enzymes, etc. Take'em with a grain of salt. Some help, some don't, some will make your symptoms worse like they did for me.
I believe the best treatment for gastritis is a PPI, a low sugar, low fat, low acid, gluten free diet and rest. It does indeed take a while to heal, but 98% of gastritis cases heal. I highly recommend you keep a food diary. All over the Internet I read about eating vegetables and lean meats is good for gastritis, but I can't tolerate'em. Crazy how even fresh organic boiled vegetables caused pain. I found out it was the vitamin C that caused it.
As for the PPI not helping, a few things. 1, the PPI may not work for you. Dexilant didn't work for me, but omeprazole and protonix did. Consider changing meds. 2, you may need to bump the dosage. 40mg worked okay, but once I took a second 40mg, my symptoms improved. A lot of the times, people will take a PPI in the morning and an h2 blocker in the evening. Take tums when needed. They're safe for the most part. And third, something you're eating is causing the pain, but you think the PPI isn't working. It probably is, but you maybe eating something your gastritis doesn't agree with. I thought the same until I found about meat was the culprit. Keep track what you eat, if it causes symptoms, drop it.
Remember, you're not alone. It will get better.
