Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
If you do have a flare up or hints of bad symptoms returning get straight back on some acid suppression meds. Don't suffer/delay & undo your good healing work.
I know exactly what you mean about feeling "better" on a bland diet. I actually don't even miss tomatoes, citrus, caffeine etc & doubt I'd bother eating them now even if I could.
Looks like you're handling your diet very well - it's a critical time not to mess it up !
I might be giving you guys my own play by play here next month... I can eat almost anything now except chilies, onions, garlic and caffeine. and canned tuna.
When I'm healed, if that ever happens, I will cry when I can have my first cup of coffee...
Hope I'm wrong.
Watch out.
my doc told me that when I'm ready I should alternate high and low dose for at least a couple of weeks, then switch to low for a time, then alternate low and nothing (or pepcid). I guess I'm lucky to have a doctor that even acknowledges acid rebound.
It only took two days for everything to blow up.
Then I wisened up, recovered, started over after a few months, and started reducing that dose by 1/8th of a pill per week.
So, first week it was 2+7/8 pills per day, second week it was 2+6/8 (meaning 1/8th piece chipped out from 2 pills), third week was 2+5/8 (1/8th chipped out from each pill), and then shit hit the fan all over again and I got rebound acid up the wazoo.
At this point I believe only dissolving them in water can provide a dose reduction small+accurate enough for anything to work. Also, there's a possibility that it is simply impossible.
And can anyone tell me if cheese is considered a soft diet food, good for gastritis??
Littlemart - I get my 300mg Zantac tablets on prescription, but 75mg is available OTC (...well it is in Europe).
Cheese is one of those tricky foods that some can tolerate & others can't. In theory it is safe from an acid/pH perspective, but the calcium content can give a subsequent acid rebound. Also the fat content can make it hard to digest. Also the lactose can cause problems for some...
Personally I can tolerate low fat cheese in moderation. Too much upsets my IBS rather than my gastritis. But I seem to be struggling more & more with dairy fat & animal fat in general which keeps leading me down the gallbladder issue path... even though it's been tested repeatedly...
The last 3 months have been a big improvement for me, especiallyFebruary. Maybe it just takes a lot of time to prepare and be able to take on the onslaught later. Sara59 didn't have any acid rebound when she went off dexilant, so there could be hope.
tummy2, give us regular updates!
You can also try ricotta.
s been like 6 months and I haven't recovered from the rebound but i had no choice I had h pylori and i don't believe mastic gum eradicates 100% just keeps it under control lowering its numbers. I coulda used zantac + antibiotics though but I just didn't know I was going to be so unlucky.
If I can give any advice is to stop it really really really slowly and do it with a professional.
I am sorry I haven't been giving updates that frequently. I have been trying to get back to living. I also never want to jinx myself, if you believe it.
@smilelike - The bland diet is just better for your body I think.
@tmp -- I am sorry that I haven't been here as much. I am pretty much eating mostly normal foods.... I avoid alcohol and coffee though.. Alot of my fear has been mental.. Once I find something sits well, I dont have that fear anymore.
@shionage -- I hope so too! I was doing very well on the 20mg... the 10mg seems ok as well aside from the occasional strange stomach feeling. I am going to stay on 10mg for 2 more weeks, then 5mg for 2 weeks and see how that goes. I have been on 10mg for about 1 week now.
Anxiety also plays a role in the acid rebound. When you go off of these if you are afraid of the rebound, it will be worse
