Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
I was diagnosed with gastritis in May '15 after having pain in my stomach. I was not given a diagnostic test of any kind, the doctor just assumed it was that as I'd taken some advil the week before without food. I went on to go ultra bland diet while taking omeprazole. Once I finally insisted on having one, and got a doctor to agree, I went and had an endoscopy in September '15. It showed I was clear, although I continued to have pain. (my doctor had taken the summer off so I was seen by random docs all summer which didn't help).
Having other, probably unrelated but strange health issues (possibly autoimmune, weird connective tissue problems etc) my doctor who had come back finally, put me through the wringer and insisted I take a digestive motility test. I didn't really see why but said okay. Finally got in for that beginning of January 2016.
I was told today that I have a sliding hiatal hernia, which the endoscopy hadn't picked up. Is it possible that the pain I'd had all along was just this and not gastritis? I don't know for sure anymore. Or that the pain I'm feeling now is just the hernia and not gastritis? It aches under my rib and sometimes around where I understand my esophagus to be. I belch a lot and feel nauseous occasionally. Back when I was diagnosed with gastritis I do feel like I had a more persistent sharp pain in the middle, and perhaps a bit more of a gnaw than I do now.
What I'm reading is hernias don't cause pain, just acid issues...but my doc was talking as though it could cause pressure and pain also. I don't know how to tell if what I'm feeling is gastritis flaring up or just the HH? not being able to tell the difference is a bit anxiety producing...because i worry about my stomach lining a lot, I don't want to get an ulcer, and it's hard to dismiss any discomfort in my chest as "just the hiatal hernia."

what is the size of the HH? It is all about size but if it slides, it is not herniating all the time.
It is sounding like an inflammed esophagus or the top of the stomach can get inflammed or have hyper sensitivity without inflammation.
I can see how a larger HH would cause pressure and maybe pain. I think a large on would. You may have a large sliding HH. Find out the size. How far up does the stomach herniate etc.
