Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
I have a long history of GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disorder) and gastritis and it seems that a lot of advice on what to eat and use for this problem might be theoretical, given by persons who have not actually had this condition themselves. In theory some say to eat lots of whole grains, fresh fruit and vegetables etc... because these will provide nutrients to promote healing but in my experience these things irritate a raw stomach. The best advice I have read is that one needs to go on a bland soft diet when one has gastritis and still it is a highly individual thing because what you could tolerate might upset me. For instance some people can tolerate yogurt during a gastritis flare, but I cant. Sometimes I can tolerate whole wheat bread but during this relapse I have to eat white bread for now. Some people tolerate Acid blockers like Zantac but I can't, it aggravates my symptoms. So now I can only take proton-pump inhibitors like Omeprazole.
You have to manage it by staying away from all hard and chemically harsh foods, eating about six small meals per day about every three hours and take the medication.
