Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

Hello,

Looking for a little direction here

I went for an endoscopy last May and was diagnosed with "mild gastritis." My doctor told me "your stomach is a little red." I took carafate for a while, but it didn't work. I switched doctors in November and the new doctor put me on a PPI and told me he "didn't think my stomach looked any more red or inflamed than anyone else."

Flash forward to this week, after about two and a half months on a PPI, i went for another endoscopy. The new doctor, the one who wasn't convinced i even had gastritis in the first place, told me that there were "no ulcers, redness or inflammation in my stomach."

Yet I still have symptoms - i get a nauseous uneasy feeling in the morning (especially after drinking water on an empty stomach), i get a pinch on the left rib and my burps get stuck after meals.

The doc is going to order more tests - right now I'm undergoing the PH Bravo monitoring and then he is going to look for SIBO and gastroparesis I believe.

But I still think it's gastritis that's giving me issues - could this be possible even though my stomach looks clear?

Just a little lost and i feel the doctor doesn't believe me. Thinking of going back to the first doctor who originally diagnosed me with gastritis if these other tests don't show anything.

Thanks for your help, just wanting life to go back to normal again.

i continued to have pain after my clear scope. Ask your doctor for a digestive motility test, or a barium test. Turns out I have a sliding hiatal hernia which an endoscopy can miss.

Thanks for you replies. Turns out the doc thinks it is being caused by visceral hypersensitivity and put me on a low dose antidepressant to treat it. Here's to hoping it helps and that the gastritis is gone!

What kind of symptoms are you having still? My GI also put me on low dose amitriptylene for the same reason and it seems to work in general but I've heard that VH takes even longer than G to clear.... since I started the ami all the pain is gone but I still have some funky nausea every now and then....I really think the PPI maybe the culprit at this point...in any case hopefully things will start to clear for you after taking the anti-d meds. Symptoms vary and are vague which is why he thinks it's vh. I have burps that get stuck, uneasiness in the stomach and pinching in the stomach/"left side.

Endo was clear and acid levels were normal.

How long did it take you to feel a difference on the antidepressant?

I think the antidepressant is actually what's giving me nausea now but I heard the side effects go away after your body gets used to the med

I think after the 3rd to fourth week I could go a few days with diminished symptoms. It kind of happened very gradual the Ami used to make me very sleepy at nights and the morning after but those side effects have passed. I seriously think that the ppi is the only thing that is messing with my stomach....in any case, give it some weeks and hopefully things will start to settle even more....one of the main complaints for Ami is weight gain and constipation. ..are you also taking amitriptyline?

I'm taking celexa. Yes the doctor warned me about the weight gain but he said at most five pounds.

I'm glad to hear that the antidepressant is working for you and that the side effects went away. I'm also having trouble with the sleepiness as today is only my third day on the medicine and it seems to be making me a bit sluggish.

Thank you, I will look out for the gradual improvement of symptoms - I'm feeling a bit impatient, but will keep a positive outlook!

Hey jane,

I'm pretty sure that your on right way at last! I've met 6-7 dfferent GI specialist and they even don't care abou my mild gastritis! They keep saying it cannot cause constant nausea! They all say my nausea is about my anxiety/panic attacks and one of them gave me Prozac but unfortunately I quited it on 5th, thanks to harsh nausea. I know I shouldn't. I'm not bad nowadays, not %100 but trying to get rid of anxiety. If I cannot handle with this myself, then I'd consider to take low-dose antidepressant like you.

You'll heal soon. Just don't quit it even if you feel really bad.

Jane, I took anti-dep called Dosulepin years ago. It took two weeks to kick in then all of a sudden when I thought it was useless, I felt better and was hungry. The depression and anxiety made me feel sickly and not wanting to eat. I lost a lot of weight. This was way before I had gastritis. When I asked my doc about if it was addictive, she said not at all (and it wasn't - came off very easily) and I also asked about weight gain as a side effect. She said it does not cause weight gain in itself - any weight gain would be because I start feeling much better and thus want to eat so she warned me not to pig out, keep your portions normal. Not sure if this goes for all anti-ds but I was great on this one.

I'm taking 20mg once a day. And yes I definitely will! Sounds like it will take a few weeks, but I'll be sure to post any updates
