Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

Another comparison question. For those who have taken Carafate. Is there an alternative to this med? What's the general consensus of opinion on this medicine?

I've been taking it for about a month and some days it seems to upset me. Of course, that could just be the nature of the gastritis beast.

I take Slippery Elm instead of Carfate. It's natural and has no side effects. It does the same thing- it coats the stomach so it doesn't hurt.

PepZin GI does the same thing.

So where do we get this Pepzin? Is it preferred over the Slippery Elm? Also.... I have a hard time swallowing large pills. Do you guys know about how big these things are? Do they come in soft gels? Thanks again. Having an ultrasound Monday so might know a little more by then. I keep hoping to find something that can be fixed!

PepZin GI pills are not large. They're probably about twice as small as a typical fish oil capsule.

If you're interested in slippery elm, Ulcetrol pills combine PepZin GI, slippery elm, mastic gum, and calcium carbonate (for acid neutralization).

They're larger than PepZin GI in size, but do not qualify as "large pills" in my opinion.
