Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

Cant get relief & middle of night nausea

Hi all. I have found myself here several times reading posts and decided to join. 


A quick background on me: I have been having stomach and GI issues for close to 6 months now. I was recently confirmed by endoscopy to have gastritis- h pylori negative. 


I tried Prilosec but it made my stomach pain worse. Was on Zantac for 5ish weeks and that eased all my symptoms but gave me bad side effects. As soon as I went off it, the stomach pain & other symptoms came right back. That's when I had the endoscopy done and GI dr put me on protonix.


I have been on Protonix for almost 3 weeks now and am still struggling. The doc wants me on for at least a month before considering switching to a different PPI. I have seen some minimal improvement but feel in a continuous pattern of one step forward, two back. 


One of my biggest struggles is waking a couple hours after going to sleep with severe nausea, stomach pain, and gurgling. When it happens, it keeps me up for several hours. Sipping ginger ale, propping myself up, and often eventually burping several times will help alleviate it eventually. Every time I feel I am going to vomit but never do. This doesn't happen every night but is very unpredictable (can't be tired to specific foods etc)


I guess I'm just so frustrated and wanted a place to talk/vent where others understood. Anyone else had similar nighttime struggles? My daytime symptoms are challenging too but this middle of the night crap is for the birds! I often struggle with wondering if I'll ever feel normal again.

I have had gastritis and Barrett's for two months. I have been taking 40mg Omeprazole for about 5 weeks and it is screwing me up. Heart palpitations, racing heartbeat, nausea, fatigue, etc.

I went to the doctor asking for something else. She prescribed Nexium OTC but I read the side effects and it is the same as what I've been having already. I think I am just going to stop all of it and eat as plain as possible and drink mylanta. Because even with the ppi meds I've been having pain and burning.

One thing you may consider is a sleep aid. It may keep you sleeping through the night. Ask your doctor about it.

I forgot to answer your question. Yes I have awakened in the middle of the night several times with a racing heartbeat. One time I went into afib and had to be cardioinverted. Bad times. I also wonder if I will ever feel normal again. And I consider is the beginning of the end for me.

Zinc carnosine! Please read the reviews of this wonderful supplement by hundreds of users on Amazon! Healed my gastritis in 3 weeks! I've suffered for over 2 years with gastritis and all my doctors could do is give me diets, PPIs and Zantac. No more! I only use zinc carnosine and I am pain free! Shame on doctors for not learning nor sharing this information to suffering patients. I hope it helps you like it helped me. I plan to stay on this supplement for the rest of my life. I quit ppi immediately but stayed on Zantac 150mg twice a day PLUS took 2 zinc carnosines after breakfast and 2 before bed. I felt so much better after only 6 days and I'm pain free at only 3 weeks! I'm about to stop Zantac altogether. I hope this helps you as it has saved my life!
