Gastritis Support Group
Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.
Have you had your endoscopy? What did it show? How are you feeling?
Yes I had the endoscopy 2 weeks ago, went ok and have been diagnoised with mild gastritis (although I don't know what's mild about it !! ), I saw a picture of the bottom of my stomach which is inflammed looks like it's really bad sunburn and sort of spotted!! negative for H Pylori, My GP said to stay on the 20mg of omeprazole and usual bland diet, but I'm off to the gp again tomorrow to change the PPI.. I am finding that no matter what I eat I get really bad indigestion like a very heavy feeling in my stomach/back and chest which is sooo uncomfortable and it's allways after I have my tablet. I was hoping they will change me to lanzoprazole or simular. I am going to put up a question soon on here asking what everyone's experience of a flare up is and how often they get them, is it every day or every few days, I seem to get discomfort every day for hours and wondered if this was normal. What type of gastritis have you got ann1? I was feeling really rough this morning, I think it's because I ate after 10.30 last night !! hope you're feeling better. :)
I saw the gastroenterologist yesterday. He suggested an endoscopy but I said I'd rather do the treatment first and then get the endoscopy if I'm not improving since we already know I have gastritis (very clear from the sx). Regarding the PPI issues you mentioned: I personally have not been able to tolerate them. I got on Nexium for a week, the burning pain stopped but I couldn't eat anything from the new type of nausea it gave me (on top of the gastritis nausea) AND rocks were sitting on my upper abdomen. Nothing was moving in my stomach. Then I tried Lansaprazole, same sx but the burning was coming back on top of it. So I am trying Pepcid AC now. I'm taking 40 mg in three divided doses, but the GI dr. said I should try to go up to 80 mg a day in divided doses to allow the stomach to heal. I'll try to work up to it. My WORST symptom is nausea. Do you have nausea? You should not eat anything after 7 p.m. - 10:30 is way too late :( It's really not worth it. I feel that when you do something to hurt your stomach like that, not only do you lose that day (of the transgression), but also some other progress you've made previously. So, try to be patient. It'll be worth it.
I hope you are feeling better and find a PPI that works for you. Please do let me know if you have nausea upon waking as well as after eating. Thank you :)
when I first started getting symptoms about 7 months ago (they didn't diagnosis this until 3 weeks ago!!).. I was getting nausea every morning...when i'd wake i'd have a horrible wave of nausea come over me and I couldn't eat anything till mid day. Since taking the PPI that has stopped but I was told it was the acid which had gathered in the night, some people say to prop the bed up with wedges to stop this happening, but I found it stopped with the meds. But talking about meds... i was at the DR yesterday(2nd time in 2 weeks they will be throwing me out next time!) I was having very bad indigestion with omeprazole and the DR has now given me ranitidine which is a h2 blocker 300mg. I took one last night...but had a bad stomach ache all day today...maybe i gotta get used to it...will give it a few weeks to see. I can't get pepcid here in the uk. I've read it's very good, wish I could try it. we'll keep informed on how well these h2 blockers do in comparison to the ppi :)
