Gastritis is a medical term for inflammation of the lining of the stomach. It means that white blood cells move into the wall of the stomach as a response to some type of injury. Gastritis has many underlying causes, from infection with the bacterium H. pylori, bile reflux, or excessive consumption of alcohol or certain foods or drugs like aspirin.

Hello everyone,
I was a regular here back in 2012 Jan through Oct. I've experienced the initial diagnosis and pain along with the fear of not knowing what was happening to me. I've also experienced the joy of recovery and the despair of relapse. So if any new comers have any questions I can probably answer them. Feel free to message me.

I'm here because I'm experiencing a mild to moderate relapse. It's been a while since I've researched and I'm wondering if there have been any new meds introduced into the market for this condition. My last check( 1 year ago) there were the natural remedies along with the slew of PPI's out there. Anything new come out over the last year?

PS. I was diagnosed through endoscopy in early 2011.

Hi,
Sorry that your symptoms have returned. Were you, or are you on any PPIs? Not sure exactly when it came out but dexilant PPI is "new". It didn't work for me, but I have heard positive feedback from others. Everyone is different.

For natural remedies, there is drinking coconut water, and takign things like DGL, slippery elm.

Yes, PPI's were crucial in my recovery, though I know of others who have managed it with natural remedies. I have tried dexilant and found it to have too many side effects.

Doesn't sound like there have been any major advancements in meds for this condition. Thanks for the reply.

Jim,

Did you try a stomach coating agent? Just curious if that would help or not, since you said you tried PPI's in the past. If not, it may be something to consider discussing with your doctor.

Yes I did. They didn't help that much and produced some nasty side effects.
I was hoping that some really smart doctor had discovered the cure for this stuff, but guess not. :):)

Wish they had one for you but heck, at least they know more about it now than they did even a few years ago. Here's hope and a toast to the future GI genius who will discover it.

Poorlygirl, what is your daily dosage of PPI and do you know what caused your gastritis?

Hi Jim well I was on two Lansoprazole s a day but it wasn,t working so then the doctor put me on Ranitidine as well. That still had no effect and some people think that in some cases PPIs can actually cause gastritis. I don,t know the cause of it. Unless you count anxiety. Ive started taking one PPI a day and Ranitidine at night. Im going to take more natural remedies. A lady said hers improved after taking something called Zegerid and Xanex for her anxiety. Im not sure if I can get them in England. My doctors are not very helpful as they say that Im on all the treatment. I will need to get a medicine review I think. Ive been dealing with asthma playing up though and have been having treatment for that. I wish this gastritis would go for us all,so many people have it.

In some cases PPI' can cause gastritis like symptoms for sure. Low acid levels can act just like gastritis. That's why so many who are double dosing PPI's think that their gastritis is not improving. When I have a flare up I double dose for a few weeks and then I gradually wean myself off the double to where im down to just one a day.
