Gastric Bypass Surgery Support Group
Gastric bypass (GBP) is any of a group of similar operative procedures used to treat morbid obesity, a condition which arises from severe accumulation of excess weight in the form of fatty tissue, and the health problems ("co-morbidities") which result. If you are considering gastric bypass or have had it, join the community where we share our experiences and find support.
We may be in the August group together - I have my first appointment with my surgeon next Friday!
I get weighed and then we talk about goals. Not weight loss goals, but better habit post surgical expectations that can be worked on now.
Things like, eating with my non dominant hand to slow me down, putting my fork down between bites, eating with child utensils, eating off of smaller plates and bowls...
We have also gone over a different caloric intake eating plan and suggestions for daily vitamins. She is a great support and there is NO pressure to be losing weight pre-surgery. One appointment I had gone up 5 lbs after my surgeon asked not to gain anything, but then I lost it all by the next appt.
Your nut should be a great resource for asking all kinds of questions and getting prepared for your new lifestyle. My last appointment is Feb 1st and then off to insurance for approval!
Hope this helped!
I know my surgeon does not require the 6 visits, they do require one or two... and I am going to a center of excellence cert place. :)
I really learned alot from my NUT. Saw her twice for 90 minutes. The first time we discussed how my eating would change after RNY, she gave me a food diary to fill out and I had a week to "practice" eating --chewing 30 times, taking 30 minutes per meal and using a baby spoon and seafood fork. The next appt. we reviewed how it went and then she explained about how nutrients are metabolized (pre and post surgery), gave me a ton of samples and explained the difference between crap vitamins and good etc. Discussed the improtance of protein, protein, protein. Just a wealth of knowledge. I plan on going back at least once when I am 3-4 months out. I refer to my notes alot. Kathy
Glad to know I am seeing a DIE instead of a NUT. (Gotta love the abv!)
(Pickle~ I promise! )
Do not forget your food diary. If I hadnt had it at the last appointment she would not have cleared me for surgery. I got my surgery date minutes after my last nut appointment.
I went through the 6 classes myself. And the NUT classes just go over things you are supposed to do after surgery. The new changes your going to have to make, how to calculate your protein intake etc. Its more like education than anything. You may have to do a food journal but its not that big of a deal. They are just there to help provide the necessary information to you and statistics. They will go by fast. Good luck!
