Gastric bypass (GBP) is any of a group of similar operative procedures used to treat morbid obesity, a condition which arises from severe accumulation of excess weight in the form of fatty tissue, and the health problems ("co-morbidities") which result. My surgeon and dietician encourage use of protein shakes, especially if you are active. Whey protein isolate is the best source of protein per my dietician so I make certain at least one shake as this as the main ingredient. I try to keep the calorie count for each shake at 200 calories or less and use 2 per day on the days I work out. I like the following brands:
Unjury - whey protein isolate is the main ingredient and I mix this with Lactaid free skim milk with 1/2 c. Fruit for my daily breakfast
Click decaf espresso and Chike coffee flavor. I mix these with either decaf coffee, water or almond milk.
Unjury Chicken flavored is another source I like and I mix this with soups to give a protein boost.
When adding protein powders to hot liquids, you need to dissolve it in either a bit of cold or lukewarm water, then add to hot liquid stirring constantly. Otherwise you'll get lumps!
I was at a plateau 5 months out until I increased my protein intake.
My nut is fine with the protein shakes since it helps me get in the protein.
My surgeon said that shakes MAY be discontinued at two months out, but the said they really didn't care if the protein came from foods or supplements, just that I met the minimum of 80 grams daily, and included it every time I ate.
