I had to do a bunch of test after my bariactric medical evaluation, blood tests, urine test, chest xray, ekg. They wanted to do them to get a baseline as to where I was. The urine test I assume was just standard but not for sure why. All my tests came back normal. I am sure it is just part of their lab testing. I would try not to worry about it!

they just look for any illegal drugs or prescription drugs that you have not listed. SOme people are not exactly honest about drug use, but most are honest like you. My doctor even required a nicotine test as he said some people would lie about it and he won't do the surgery if you use nicotine in any form. It is just a standard test.

I think it's because they want to make sure you don't have any drug interactions in case you didn't list something. I f you mix two drugs that aren't supposed to be mixed, it could be dangerous. Just looking out for your well being is all. And the nicotine thing is serious. My doc told me, you won't heal as well if you have nicotine in your system. Good luck!

You know that Dr's like to cover all their bases. Even if a test comes back positive, the Dr. will most likely just review the safety issues and problems with certain drugs and how it can not only hinder the surgery, but the final outcome of the surgery. Everything is confidential so you do not have to be concerned. The Dr. is just making sure everything is covered so that the surgery will be uneventful and positive. Some drugs may interact with the anesthesia and other things they might need to give you post op. Also, some drugs may cause breathing issues during surgery. It is just a precaution to get those tests done. You are not the only one who has had them. They are not just singling you out. You will be just fine. Take good care of yourself. The hurdles are almost over and you will be on your way. Best of luck.

The biggest reasons are liability and potential drug interactions. As mentioned some people are not exactly honest and, we all forget things from time to time. The doc just wants to be sure there is not a chance for a drug interaction which may lead to serious complications.

It was just a question I had I dont do illegal drugs but I do take some pain relief like I said is all documented because my primary care doc and my bariactric doc got the same system and the info is shared. I was really just curious and I was afraid to as the doc because I didnt want him to think that I was using drug lol. I am very serious about getting this done so I would do anything to jeprodize it I have never been a smoker anyways but thanks for all the answers they really helped

They didn't find the illegal drugs I was taking, just kidding, if they did test I was not aware. But they do ask about drug, alcohol and nicotine use when you fill out your paperwork.
They just want to make sure that you do not have a dependency, this does not go hand in hand with this type of surgery

No idea. But I think they want a really accurate picture of how your body is functioning prior to taking you to the OR. No worries. Just trust your surgeon.

Is this for your pre-op to surgery? I know they test before surgery to see if you are pregnent. They may also be looking for fat in your urine...if you are losing that or protein.

A common 5 panel drug screen is very specific, are you sure that is what was ordered? we run these for random drug/alc programs in the work place. The labs look for marijuana,opiates,barbituates,ect...stuff like vicodine may show up if taken on a daily basis but the doctor is aware of your prescriptions to rule them out.

When i had my phych exam, they were very clear that people with addictions were not usually successful with WLS. They will not waste their time or your insurance company's money if they dont think you are going to be able to follow the program.

My cousin was recently turned down for WLS and she was told it wasnt medically necessary. I know she has been through rehab more than once for drugs, so i suspect that was probably the reason.

There are multiple reasons for the tests and the others are correct as well.
