I've only just been referred for surgery so it'll be about a year before anything happens (I'm in Canada). frankly, I have just squeaked in to be referred. My weight is 'only' 212 lbs so my BMI is just shy of 39. It's all the co-morbidities I've got that weight loss will help.

Anyways, I am going crazy as my weight goes up. My clothes aren't fitting and I've never been this weight before. I'm thinking about trying Atkins again. I can't do a lot of strenuous activities due to osteoarthritis (and being in a small town in the middle of nowhere, there aren't options like a pool). The last time I tried Atkins last year, my weight didn't budge.

Should I try to lose weight? Will I lose my referral if I do lose weight? I'm not sure what to do. I know that if I do strict Atkins Induction (which I did few years ago and lost 66 lbs), it's all going to come back in spades when I try to eat a little more normally.

Any thoughts on this would be most appreciated - thanks!!

Hi Ally I'm sure you get alot of advice from this group everyone is great and has helped me .I weighed 260before my first visit to My family Dr. He put me on tyroid med which helped some of course refered me to bariatric dr. I had tobe under supervision of family Dr for 6 months before My insurance would cover surgery. Like you I have osteo arthritis plus was in a bad car accidend 3years haven't bee able to be very active. Also had tried about every diet where i lost but then gain back.I was put on high protein low carb diet by bariatric dr and was sheduled for surgery after the 6 months.since my surgery 5/18/2009 i'm 170and still losing. good luck

Hi Ally,
I'm in Windsor and just started the process too. 2 months of lots of apt. and the same for May. I am sure hoping I get a date way before a year.
I was told to make any healthy changes I could. Anything you do to make things healthier for yourself is a good thing. This is going to be about making life changes. Lots of experienced help on these pages. Good luck Dorothy

welcome to the boards! first off all these questions you have about your referral etc i would call and talk to your dr. they would know best. like said before any healthy change is a good change. cut down fat, sugar, carbonated beverages. before my surgery i had to lose 20lbs before my dr would do surgery. i did high protein low carb real clean healthy eating program. pretty much what i eat now after surgery. it really helped me with the transition after surgery. gl and grats on starting your journey
