Gastric Bypass Surgery Support Group
Gastric bypass (GBP) is any of a group of similar operative procedures used to treat morbid obesity, a condition which arises from severe accumulation of excess weight in the form of fatty tissue, and the health problems ("co-morbidities") which result. If you are considering gastric bypass or have had it, join the community where we share our experiences and find support.
I totally understand where you are coming from:) When I started the 6 month nutrition period I was excited and lost weight the first couple of months. Then it hit me that some foods I would never be able to eat again. So yes, I did the farewell tour to chicken wings, fried mushrooms, lemon cookies, steak fries - you name it. I was freaking out when I saw my nutritionist again and she laughed and told me I was totally normal. She gave me the best advice - if you want a bite of something you shouldn't be eating, really concentrate on that first bite, in terms of taste and texture and decide if it's worth eating. At month five I was craving home- made macaroni and cheese. I made it (feeling guilty the whole time) and then took my first bite. To my surprise it felt greasy and oily and I ended up throwing the rest out.
I am now having RNY in four weeks.I felt so good by month 6 that I am walking four miles a day and lost more than the amount I needed to qualify for surgery.
This group is the best, and no matter what stage we are at in our journey, there will always be someone who understands what you are going through!
Take care,
Diana
Good luck with your journey.
Michael
I decided to self impose a liquid diet for a week before my surgery, and I am in the middle of that now. Surprisingly, it isn't as hard as I thought it was going to be and I am happy to feel so much more in control. I think I am at peace, have said goodbye to my old life, and am beyond excited about starting my new one. My mantra, when I get sad about losing all the foods I loved, is "don't worry, you have already had enough of that." It is silly and simply, and kinda stupid, but for some reason it works for me. It reminds me that I am not being deprived ... I have spent a lifetime eating "enough" of everything and I don't need to be sad about losing it now.
I wish you so much luck!! I am sure you are going to do great!
I had the same feelings and decided to have what I wanted. Since I started this adventure I have been cutting everything in 1/2. So I made a list of "last suppers" and had them before my surgury date. Very few did I finish and maybe a year from now I can have some of them again, in tiny portions. In fact, I ended up throwing out much of the leftovers ... too many goodies, too little time. I don't regret it and don't really have many cravings. Just for saltines when I went back into the hospital (lol).
Good luck all - we will get through this, together!
Another factor to my story is that I had a VBG in '89, so had 'practice' in slow to-mush chewing [as fast or swallowing too large a chunk = barfing. I did ALOT of barfing!] With this surgery, I find I eat MORE than I did B4 :-( Still lost weight due to the by passing of some intestine, but was concerned my pouch was too large. Turned out it isn't--"culprit" is that I have a larger exit now so food leaves my pouch faster than w/my old surgery. This is disapointing as now I have to come to grips w/the fact that I'll have to face non-stomach-dictated portion control to keep losing now :-( But DON'T LET MY SITUATION DEPRESS THE REST OF YOU!!! You'll be going from 'normal' stomachs that hold about a quart to smaller and won't have my issue. But you'll have a different frame of reference, so keep your chins up!
Anyway, don't think 'never more', but 'less' or 'smaller'. And w/my surgeon, weight gain = delay in the setting of the surgery date [I was required to lose weight 1st to demonstrate ability to make the necessary life style changes for continued sucess of the surgery, which they emphasied was a TOOL and not a 'magic bullet'.] Moreover, I do NOT have trouble eating any foods except raw carrots; I just need 2B sure I propery 'chew to mush' as per directions. So take heart :-)
Hope I was of help.
