So yesterday I went for my 1 month follow up with the surgeon. I met with the nurse practitioner instead of the doctor himself. The good news is I have lost 29 pounds if you count from my hightest weight and 26 pounds if you count from my visit 3 weeks before surgery. Anyway...either way, I'm officially thinner now than I was on my wedding day 4 years ago.

Anyway, as I posted on Wednesday, I had a bad night Tuesday night as a result of what I now call "the great tortilla chip binge". It was nothing but a stress eat and it was horrible. Anyway, when I went into my appointment yesterday I told them about the tortilla chip binge and I cried....(I know, I'm such a baby!). Anyway, they were so very sensitive and understanding and supportive, it was amazing. I was so grateful for that. The nurse practictioner said that since I am a month out, I most likely did not do any damage to my pouch and that if I am concerned, I should just keep an eye on things and let them know if I experience any problems. WHEW!!! They also thanked ME for being HONEST with them! I can imagine how many people aren't, but I told them it wouldn't be fair to myself or them if I weren't honest because if something happened to me, they should know about things like that.

Anyway, my anticipation was definitely worse than what it really turned out to be. WHEW! I was also released to eat pretty much anything, as long as I watch fat, carbs, sugar, etc. and just to try one new thing at a time and see how I do. Overall they said I am doing very well. I am thrilled....and feel so very blessed that God has given me such a good recovery! Thank you everyone for your support!

I just went into my 10th month post op. I was at work all day and went to the final baseball game of the season the other night. I don't eat hot dogs, and my stomach doesn't do well with beef. I knew I needed to eat something but at the ball park, there is hot dogs, hamburgers, pizza, popcorn, and nachos. I texted my nutritionist, and she told me to get the nachos and have them put the cheese in a separate container and use as few of the nacho chips as possible to scoop up as much cheese on each chip as possible. Thus giving me more protein and not eating many chips. I ate six of the nacho (tortilla) chips with about 1/2 cup of the cheese. I chewed them up very well, ate them slowly, and had no problems. When I talked to the nutritionist the next day, she pointed out, it's about better choices. Of the choices I had, this was the best choice and she commended me on just eating 6 chips. I still have a problem for myself with eating snack foods, but this actually became a meal. Not the best, but the best I could have at that time and place.

I think it is great that you were able to be so honest with your team, t Down 26 lbs at one month after surgery-- that's amazing! Keep doing this for you!

Honesty truly is the best policy. It's when we keep secrets and hide that we are in trouble. Good for you!! Sounds like you have a great team.

Thanks everyone! I think this is why my surgeon is considered to be one of the best in the state! He is a genuine man and I really appreciate him - and it seems as if his staff is the same way, which is so nice!

@Fatmans...that is really awesome that you texted your nutritionist. I don't even have my nut's cell phone number to text her! I am not sure what I would have done in your shoes! Sometimes you just gotta do what you just gotta do...and if the choices are limited, it is difficult. The nurse practitioner told me yesterday that corn chips aren't horrible because they are crumbly and break down pretty good in the stomach, so I guess it wasn't ALL bad....but it will be a LONG TIME before I ever eat another tortilla chip!

I've even been told it's ok to use Corn Tortillas for sandwiches, etc.

i agree..i find it amazing being pre op and being truthful im still not judged..great news..don't be too hard on yourself..all will work out

I think a lot of us struggle with the 'all or nothing' attitude, but none of us are perfect. Of all people, my surgeon is the one who told me at my 3 mos check up that this process isn't about deprivation and torture - it's about making better choices long term. At least you had the ability to recognize "the great tortilla chip binge" for what it was - stress eating. Even if you could have recognized that a month ago, would you have done anything about it? Every step along this journey is important. Despite the calorie overdose, give yourself some credit for the self-awareness!

Ha - I love tortilla chips too. I am 17 months out and recently I started chewing up the chips and then spitting them out. How crazy is that? Just like the salt and the taste of them. I only do this once in a while, I figure it is better than swallowing them. I only do it when no one is around, since it is pretty gross. I started doing that because when I eat something now, and I always try to make healthy choices, and I don't like it, I spit it out. Not going to waste calories on something I don't like. Oh, and if I am in public or with others I don't spit it out, I just stop eating it. I' not THAT gross :-)
