Mary I have just scheduled my revision. I have ulcers (sometimes bleeding) caused by a stricture. I have found out that this was all caused by NSAIDS and anti-inflammatory meds...so if you are doing if of these over the counter or RX get off of them now and go back to a soft foods/high protein-LOW FIBER...diet to get it to calm down and see if this gives you any relief. I am in search of info regarding revision (surg. will be another full open no laparoscopic.) My dr. has scared the dickens out of me with telling me my chances of complications have increased, I will be on a feeding tube for 4-6 weeks and I won't even begin to feel human for at least 2-3 weeks...I believe I can only find out what I am facing from others who have been through this. This maybe a silly question but can I ask of either of you enjoyed spicy foods?

I ask this because the pouch is always to remain senstitive. Even with taking priolsec may cause irritation.....

I before surg. I loved hot or spicy foods... post surg NOT A CHANCE...my friends tease me for being such a wimp...LOL

Wow Sheri! I'm so sorry you have had to schedule this revision!! I have never taken any NSAIDS since my surgery. Didn't your surgeon advise you not to take any NSAIDS?? Before my surgery I took "tons" of 800 motrins! I'm sure those ruined my original stomach since I had major heartburn etc. I had a heinal hernia and didn't even know it, but my surgeon fixed that during my gastric by-pass. I was fine for the first 8 months after the surgery. At this moment I am ok and almost pain free, but it doesn't take much to trigger that damn ulcer! How long have you suffered with this ulcer(s). I am seeing a couple of good doctor's from Boston Medical Center who are doing there best to help me avoid a reversal! I like you, am HORRIFIED of the thoughts of that surgery!! I had lapraroscopic for my surgery. Damn I wish I could help you!
When did you have your initial surgery?? When are you scheduled to have the revision? You are going to be fine!! Today they can almost perform miracles :-)

Bonnie - Yes I loved my spicy food prior to surgery!! I have tried a little spicy food since my surgery, but yea that's not such a good idea! Since this ulcer formed I don't dare to since I know it will cause great pain! No thanks! I took prilosec twice a day and carafate 4 x a day for I'd say a solid year or so! That stuff is useless to me! This is the 4th week of Nexium and carafate and a very strict diet and I have to say so far so good! I've had small bouts of pain and have taken a tiny bit of Roxicet, but at least for now I seem to be doing better.

I too have had an ulcer develop since my surgery. I had to go on nexium and carafate and still have troubles with it. A doctor explained to me that since the upper small intestine has been removed, that area is no longer protected and that is why ulcers tend to appear in so many patients. My doctor gave me the run down of things to avoid (coffee, spicy foods, soda, alcohol etc), most of which I do avoid anyway. I find strawberry watermelon MIO causes me to flare. One of the first questions I was asked was if I smoked (which I thought was funny because my doctor will not perform surgery on smokers). I am 1 year out from my surgery and am still extremely careful of what I eat.

For those who say we take the easy way out with this surgery, this is one thing we go through that shows this is by all means not easy...

sheriew17 my thoughts are with you as you go through the revision. I don't know what I would do if I had to go through that.

OMG Yes it is not the "easy" way out!

I feel so bad for Sherie! She is going to be ok! It's just an awful thing to have to go through for sure!

Thank you Bonnie! I went to the doctor's today again. He is looking into removing one of my staples with hopes that this ulcer will heal then :-)

shesh........over a year out and this remns a possibilty.

My physician makes us take priolsec daily and says we'll be on tit the rest of our lives because ulcers form fast and easy.....
