I've had to travel more than normal lately and I've actually been pleasantly surprised that I've been able to stay on track. Here are a few "tricks" i've found that have worked for me so far:
Have water on-hand at all times.
Have "good snacks" in my brief case - i.e., protein bars, nuts, turkey jerky, etc. in case i have to snack while in day-long meetings. I find that if i don't eat every few hours then i get the shakes - just by taking a bite of a protein bar or a few nuts will tide me over.
If i go out to dinner while traveling i usually order a high protein item from the appetizer section - typically smaller portions.
I try t make sure the hotel has a mini-fridge - then i can take leftovers back to my room. i can stock it with such things as low-cal cheese, yogurt, fruit and veggies, to eat if i don't go out to dinner.
One thing that has worked really well for me both at home and when i am away is a 4 chambered bento box type container. It has compartments for 1/8 to 1/2 cup portions and it clicks together making a thin tall container that fits in my brief case or sits on my desk. I load each chamber with my snacks for the day - a handful of nuts in one, 1/2 of a protein bar cut into small squares into another, dried soybeans and then maybe a few sugar free chocolate chips into the smallest section (just to feel like i have something sweet). Then whenever i feel like i need to have a snack i can do so without any regrets.
I have yet to eat everything from it in one day but just knowing that i can do so has been a big relief for me. I think it is a mind-over-matter type thing. I am in control of the food, the food is not in control of me!
