Gastric Bypass Surgery Support Group
Gastric bypass (GBP) is any of a group of similar operative procedures used to treat morbid obesity, a condition which arises from severe accumulation of excess weight in the form of fatty tissue, and the health problems ("co-morbidities") which result. If you are considering gastric bypass or have had it, join the community where we share our experiences and find support.
Not to get too gross, but you know how so many of us suffer from constipation? well i have suffered for years pre-op, and that didn't change post-op.
But i connected something. preop i did the adkins diet. while on that diet i was more regular (every day, same time, same place) than i had been in my whole life.
Now post op, if i miss my protein shake in the morning, i don't go the bathroom.
So i googled it. Seems that a side effect of high protein (or protein OD) is diarrhea.
Soooo, while I'm not ODing, the high protein keeps me regular.
Anyhoo, my fear is not so much with the super high amounts of protein, as with the quality. i just can NOT eat 60 grms a day. these protein shakes can have some really bad stuff in them like heavy metals and crap - consumer reports did an article. but what choice do we have?
remember - we don't absorb all we eat. so maybe we eat 100 grms but only get 70.
speaking of absorption i would love it if someone out there would be able to tell us the percentage by which our absorption is reduced - it would make it so much easier in terms of figuring out nutrition and medicine. But i guess every patient is different.
Shelley :o)
As far as too much in one sitting (as in body cannot absorb it) That is is better to spread it out over the day, but it having a larger amount in one sitting is ok too... So I don't think you'll do any harm to have a 60 gm protein drink at one time... but half that, 3 times per day would be optimal

I know many surgeons guidelines are less... but mine said strive for around 80 to 100 per day post op.
NUT and many other resources believe that Isolate is better for weight loss and is a purer form. Whey concentrate or carbonate are not as good for us.
