Hi I am a 51yo F, going to have surgery in the next month or 2. I have been on cortico-steroids for almost 30 years following a kidney transplant. I am about 110 pounds overweight. Anyone else here in the same (or similar) boat? What has your experience been?

Hi - I just joined and found it amazing how similar our basic stories are. I am also 51 y/o and have been on steroids for 20yrs following kidney transplant. Scheduled for sleeve surgery next month. Whatever happened to you. I would love an update of you're still part of the group.

I have MS and for years did IV solumedrol IV treatments about every 3 months. My surgeon wanted me off of them for at leats 3 months and I was before surgery. Well when I woke up there was my concerned surgeons face saying that sewing me together was like sewing wet toilet paper. He said if he had known my internal organs were so thin from the steroid use he never would have done the surgery. He kept a very close watch on me those first 3 months and was thrilled when I did not leak or rupture. He doesn't want me to ever do steroids again. I don't know how strong a dose is that you are on but mine was extremely high given through IVs for 3 days each time. My surgeon is highly experienced with GBPS but had never done one on someone who had done steroids like I did. So he was not expecting what he found inside. Please tell your surgeon what I wrote here.

i have been on Prednisone for 2 1/2 years anywhere from 5mg to 60mg.. I know not the same i sometimes think that the steroid keeps me from losing more weight but i go with the flow i know i will be on it the rest of my life

I am long term steroids and have been for several years. I had the surgery two weeks ago and feel great already. I have severe asthma and have been on the ventilator eight times and I am only 36 yr old. They had to increase my steroids for the surgery but was able to go back down to my normal dose (10mg) right after surgery. I had this surgery because I gained my weight from the steroids and in hopes of ever getting off of it I need to get the weight off which is nearly impossible with being on steroids. So since my surgery on 10/16/12 I have lost 27# and already have had my diabetic (Steroid induced) meds decreased!! My highest dose has been 240 mg daily of prednisone and this is my current lowest dose yet. I wish you luck with your surgery and would love updates from you!!
