Hi all,
Merry Christmas to everyone! I celebrated by starting stage 3 foods today but didn't get much chance to actually do that. For breakfast I added a half cup of cottage cheese and it tasted like heaven because I could CHEW it. I also had a bit of chocolate pudding, and those two flavors didn't go together quite well, but I didn't care. I got to eat something other than soup!
I'd prepared a full spread for a lunch buffet as my inlaws, SIL and husband, and my brother were coming over to open gifts and then go out to dinner so I wouldn't have to cook. Knowing I would have another chance to chew at dinner, I opted for a protein shake for lunch.
Then we went to dinner and I promptly encountered my first complication, road block, screw-up, whatever you want to call it.
I asked for and received a child's portion of a turkey dinner that came with cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes (I had them leave off the gravy), candied yams, and stuffing. (The original plan was for me to mooch off my 13-y.o. son's turkey dinner, but he got a hamburger instead!) I had one small bite of potatoes and didn't touch either the yams or the stuffing. The fun started with the turkey.
It was mostly dry and a little stringy, but I did find about five bites of decent meat that were moist enough to tolerate. As soon as I reached that fifth bite, though, a massive case of heartburn overcame me that made my lower esophagus feel like it was thumping the bass line to a super-loud rap track and trying to claw its way out of my chest! I quickly explained to my husband why I looked so funny and promptly excused myself to hide in the bathroom in case, well, you know.
Anyway, fifteen minutes of hiding in the ladies' room seemed to be enough to partially alleviate the heartburn. The thumping subsided, but my God--it hurt! Thankfully there were no eruptions from either my south or north ends during that time. Here's what I think:
1--I probably overate with the turkey
2--I didn't chew enough, even though each bite was chewed 40 times (I counted)
3--I couldn't tolerate the turkey so I should just leave it out for a few weeks
When I returned home, I killed a couple of hours by cleaning up the rest of the buffet dishes and playing a board game with my son. By then the heartburn had nearly dissipated. I knew I had to eat SOMEthing in order to keep my protein levels up, but all I could stomach was a small bowl of hot and sour soup (broth only).
Any thoughts on how I could have handled this differently?

I thought about it some more and figured I could avoid a mess like this next time by remembering to PUREE things. I should have had the restaurant put the turkey and yams into the blender with some broth and the problem would have been solved. I guess I just got too excited to chew again. :-(
Lesson learned, and thank God today is another day and another chance.
