I have very fine hair too. I don't seem to have lost much hair at all, and I'm a male who is 26 years old. I think keeping your protein intake high (75-100g) might help, but I'm not exactly sure.

I don't want to scare you but I have had significant hair loss. Try Biotin with your multivit. it has helped slow it down some. My surgeon told me that he has never seen anyone go bald but a general thinning is expected. I have very very thick hair and at 3 months post it stated thinning no it is about normal but for me normal is thinto me I am 6 month out now and it is still comming out but like I said the Biotin has helped> I wish I would have done that from the start. in my local support group we talked about hair loss and most experienced it but they all said it grows back. good luck

protein, protein, protein! eggs, milk, cheese if you can tolerate it... this is one thing I am worried about as well... fine, thin hair! My pre-op nutritionist says that this is the key! the more protein the better! have you tried adding protein powders in some of your recipes? I've heard that works as well. Good luck, and remember, you look mah-vel-ous!

I have heard about the Biotin...do you take the regular kind that you can swallow or do you have to get a bariatric-approved version of Biotin?

I too have the same fear. My hair is thin also. I've been using biotin for a while, but it hasn't seemed to help me. However, a post-op gastro friend told me lots of Protein! I also read an article from a lady who had gastro yrs ago and she started using this stuff called Silica Complex by Puritan's Pride O. I ordered some on Ebay, and I have checked out the Puritan's Pride site. Haven't received it yet, but I figured I'd give it a try. P/S-my surgery is the 14th. Keep me posted on how you do!

Hi Debbie! Keep us posted on how the Puritan Pride works. My surgery was June 2nd, and so far no hair issues. I was also told to eat alot of protein, which I do. :)

I can't really tell you because I am still due to have the surgery in a few days. However I heard about it also, and it did bother me, so, I started taking biotin and the b vitamins and using the shampoo for hair loss. I was already losing hair to begin with. But since I've started doing this stuff i have gotten hair back and I will be using it ongoing....bless you.

I had nice thick hair.... i took the vitamins... biotin and ate protein ... at 3 mos I started to lose my hair... im in my 8th month and its now coming back... my hair got severly thin and brittle... i cried everyday !! I also used niocin shampoo and this liquid by redken called extreme anti snap which has been working my hair is coming back and it looks great !!!! take the biotin and use the shampoo it will come back !!!

I totally understand your fear of losing your hair, but assure you...even if you do drop a lot of hair and it looks crappy for awhile, it will come back! Worst case scenario is a wig for awhile, right? On the other hand, you will not only get to a healthy weight, you will get a life with the kind of movement, confidence, and joy that you cant even imagine right now. Thinning hair for a few months is so worth it!!

I took Biotin, ate lots of protein every day, and used the Nioxin shampoo and conditioner (which actually made my hair feel good)but I still shed for about 4 months. Funny thing is that it has come back in even curlier than it was before and Im kinda missing how thin and easy to straighten it used to be.

I never skipped a protien shake every day, and I am 7 monthes out tomorrow. I have had NO hair loss. Hair loss fear yes! Hair loss no. My hair is fine and thin, I am 51 and lost 85 pounds since surgery.
When I talked to surgeon about it he said ' some do...some don't'.
But for the record...I would have done it either way = )

That is actually one of my fears also.So i will take everyones advice!

Can someone tell me what kind of Biotin I need to take post-op? Can I take the pill form and will it still be absorbed properly?

I have always had very thick, brittle hair. I am 11 weeks post-op and have not noticed any hair loss yet, but my hair is dryer than ever before. My skin is also scaly and dry. I can attribute my dry hair/skin to lack of protein and vitamins. I am not getting the nutrition that I need and if I don't do something soon I think I"ll start to see my hair shedding, which is a concern for me.

I am worried about this too.... I am already loosing hair due to the fact I am on blood thinners and this will add to it I am afraid.
