Today I go for my desensitization study since I was not able to tolerate the cpap mask and machine during the split sleep study I had last week. And it more that just sucking it up and dealing with it. I am severaly claustrophobic and is caused a full out panic attack that made me physically ill. I also found out today that this could in fact effect my surgey date in a negative way. I am so bummed. I asked the nurse at my surgeon's office what happens if I absolutely cannot tolerate any type of mask they try on me and she told me that does happen and I would need to go back to the pulmonary doctor and explain that to him and hopefully will discuss it with my surgeon. They tell me that I need to have this cpap because of the anesthesia but I had major surgery last summer under general anesthesia and no one cared if I had sleep apnea, it wasn't brought up even on time. I had no issues either. This is very frustrating!!!!!!!!!!!
My surgery date, 9/12, is so close and yet it is on the verge of being snatched away from me. The nurse at the surgeon's office was very kind as to schedule a back up date 9/25) for me just in case. I am going to do everything in my power to keep my date on 9/12. My husband already got the time off from work approved and it was a major issue for him his company was not very cooperative about giving him the days off. So now if it changes we have to go through all that again with his work. Ugghh it is stressing me out !!!!

Ask about the nose tubes. Looks just like the ones for oxygen. One in each nostril, I was offered that first. This will pass hun, play their game. Drs dont want you to get so sleepy on those pain meds etc and stop breathing! Once the weight comes off, so will the mask hopefully!! I surely don't miss mine!!

I can't see how it could possibly help me if wearing the mask or whatever they put on me causes me to get physically ill and suffer a severe panic attack. I guess they could medicate me every night so I could tolerate it but that seems to be defeating the purpose.
I am going to my appointments and I will try the masks and whatever else they try to use on me but I am not opitmistic at this point.
I am just so very frustrated that I have come so far and worked so hard and now to have this stupid issue.

As far as the anesthesia, prior to my surgery I had to have a colonoscopy. Due to the sleep apnea, the doctor insisted the colonoscopy be done in the hospital rather than her clinic. She said it happens periodically that a person with sleep apnea can stop breathing even under the twilight anesthesia they give you for a colonoscopy, so she wanted to be in the hospital .
This is a serious condition that should not be taken lightly. Your surgeon is only looking out for your best interests.
But I understand that regardless of what happened with my surgery last summer THIS SURGERY is requiring that I do all of this stuff for sleep apnea.
I had my desensitization test and basically a respiratory therapist tried the nasal pillow mask on my and let me wear it for like 15 minutes. Still made me feel very anxious but it was MUCH better than the regular masks. So I went to see my pulmonary doctor when I was done so they could schedule me for the cpap titration test and the sleep center didn't have any openings until 9/19 a full week AFTER my surgery. So they put me in for that date and put me on a wait list. That was not sitting well with me too many unknowns. All of this was stressing me so bad I had a total break down at work this morning, so embarassing! One lady I work with suggest I try a different sleep center. So I called my pulmonary doctor and they said that would be fine with them, checked with my insurance and they said that would be fine too. So I called the other center and they got me in on Tuesday night 8/21! Yeah I just am going to do my best and fight my way through the night and get this over with!! I am so releived to be able to get a date so soon.
