So I'm going on my 4 weeks since having the surgery and I have had a protein shake every morning for breakfast since the full liquid stage - and during my 2 week pre-op diet. I have not changed anything about making my shakes, I use the same milk and protein powder that I've always used. In the last week, I have noticed that I have a nauseated feeling after drinking my morning shake that lasts for about 30 mins after I'm done. I am having to force myself to drink the entire thing so i can get all of the protein benefit. I know I did not become lactose intolerant because I can eat yogurt and other dairy products without a problem. I'm thinking my tummy has just gotten sick of shakes. Has anyone else had this problem? Should I experiment with other protein powders?

Sorry you are feeling nauseated. Have you been drinking them faster? At over a year it still takes a half hour and sometimes more to get mine in. when it takes. While I add ice cubes which thins it down. That really helps. Have you tried soy milk? I use unsweet silk soy milk.

I'm on week 5 of post-op and I've had nausea from my protein shake since week 2. I've tried several different kinds and finally had to stop them for a while. I ate tuna, cottage cheese, chicken, cheese sticks and beans to get in my protein. This past Saturday I tried again with my shake and was able to get it down, by mixing it with water and a little frozen fruit, but my intestines are not happy when it gets that far. It takes me between 30 and 45 mins. to get it down. At first there is nausea and then cramping in the intestines while it is breaking down the protein...oh and a ton of gas. I'm just doing the best I can with my shake. Maybe if you mix it with water and add 4 ice cubes you might be able to get it down easier? My prayers are with you because I know how difficult it is. Hugs, Carol.

Maybe your new tummy doesn't welcome the COLD fluid that you are putting into it in the AM. Perhaps you could try a premixed protein drink like Premier Protein, and sip on it at room temperature. If you are drinking chocolate flavored protein, perhaps the chocolate is the culprit. It seems the actual PROTEIN gets blamed when these drinks don't sit well. Perhaps it is how we are drinking them. Like LCAT said, you may be drinking them too fast. You need to look at the HOW you are taking the protein drink, rather than just blaming the protein for the feeling of nausea.

Are you using cow's milk or another lactose free milk product? I'm still pre-op, so I'm not sure if this is common or not, but I was told by my nut that we should avoid dairy for the first month after having surgery. There's a higher chance that you will be lactose intolerant from the surgery. After the first month, you can introduce dairy back into your daily routine. I personally don't care for soy milk so I'm going to try lactaid for my shakes. Hope this is helpful!

No, you are not the only one!! I was sick of them the 2nd week post-op. They made so nauseated!! I found the Slim Fast High Protein went down easier than any of them. I also found if I mixed a scoop of the chocolate shake with the SF Carnation Instant Breakfast, it was more palatable than either one on their own. I experimented with other powders and found they all tasted the same, even "unflavored" ones! If you decide to experiment with other ones, go to a vitamin store and see if they will let you return it if you can't handle it. I know Vitamin World and Unjury let me return the opened containers b/c I couldn't handle them...just a thought. Oh, and you might ask your dr/surgeon for anti-nausea meds if you are nauseated a lot.

I drink my morning shake during my hour-long commute to work. By the time I get to the parking lot, I still have some left in my cup. Yesterday, it took me an hour and a half to get through it all. I make it with ice cubes, 4oz of milk, 1 scoop of powder (20g). By the time it's all said and done, it's about 12oz of liquid. I do use cow's milk, and I have had no problems with yogurt, cottage cheese, regular cheese or any other dairy product. So I don't think I have become lactose intolerant because if I had, then I would not be able to tolerate dairy products in general. My plan does not call for any restrictions on dairy, I could start drinking milk on my second week. I am not blaming the protein for it, but I have thought of the possibility that maybe this particular brand of protein has become intolerable to me, even though it was fine up until this week. It's gotten so bad that the mere thought of a protein shake turns my stomach. I also seem to have the same reaction whether it's cold or room temp (which it gets to be by the time 30mins has passed and I'm still not done!). I may have to consider Dianabelle's idea or try the Carnation SF instant breakfast with a little additional chocolate protein powder. I'm so glad I'm not the only one who has had this problem!

After my surgery I couldn't drink the shakes anymore as they make me sick. I use to do them with water before the surgery, but they tasted like S*** Sorry for my language, but they really tasted like that...LOL
