Gastric bypass (GBP) is any of a group of similar operative procedures used to treat morbid obesity, a condition which arises from severe accumulation of excess weight in the form of fatty tissue, and the health problems ("co-morbidities") which result. Well... I sent an email to my totally cool psychologists at my surgeons office and asked him if i could work with him in an internship role (I"m a PSY student)... Sitting in on psy evals and helping with the support group meetings and such.
In part, this is the response i received:
"It would be my delight to have you around here gaining some experience in the field of bariatrics and in psych work in particular. I will indeed bring this up with our clinical director and discuss it with her."
The one stopper might be considering I am a patient there... it could be an ethical issue, a conflict of interest. However, I will be about 2 months post op by the time fall term hits, so who knows, maybe!!
And if it don't work out... his response he sent me tonight made my week! LOL! :)

I too am a psy major (Master of Arts in Counseling) and begin practicum this fall. It's highly likely that if there is a conflict, he can put in a good word or recommendation to someone else he knows (perhaps at another bariatric surgeons office). I'm interviewing today for a possible practicum site.... Good luck to you! Is bariatrics/eating disorders/etc. your focus long-term?
