A while back i posted about a strange thing going on with my mouth. It feels like there's gritty sand floating around all the time.
I suspected a link to RNY and went to 8 docs to figure it out. finally i went to an oral pathologist who said i had oral sensory neuropathy. Commonly know as burning mouth syndrome. BMS can be burning feeling, strange tastes, or strange textures. He said the nerves are malfunctioning.
Of course no cure. the doc said some people have a little relief with a drug similar to valium. Well that didn't work - mostly freaked me out and i stopped it after 5 days.
But then my sister who is a vet told me a bit about how nerves work. they are covered in a fatty myelin sheath. she wondered if i had lost some fat around these nerves, causing the issue.
more internet research revealed that some suspect BMS can be caused by unmyelination of the nerve. Treatment - alpha lipic acid.
I reached out to my nut and we discussed my vitamins. i am going to up my calcium (which the nut discovered can cause mouth issues) and i'm already on 50k iu of d (low d causes malabsorption of calcium) for 8 more weeks. and i'm going to add the ALA.
during my talk with the nut he told me about a great website. ASMBS. below is a link to their report on nutrition after GBS. it is a very interesting report.
I wanted to share my story and the info i found. i think that the world of GBS focus on those vitamins that when deficient could really harm us. but there are many trace vitamins and minerals that we could be missing.
I don't advise doing this without your nut, but just want you to be aware of the fact that we may be low in vitamins our docs aren't even testing.
My BMS isn't going to kill, but it annoys the hell out of me. and i would love to resolve it. I will let you all know if the ALA works!

it can be frustrating thinking that something is off with your vitamins, but not knowing for sure.
It's a long process of adding in vitamins as you start one at a time, giving each one a couple of weeks to see if it, alone, works.
also, in my research and discussions with my nut, i have found some vitamins can become toxic if you get too many. like zinc.
I'll let you know if it works!
