Caffeinated beverages such as coffee and tea should be okay in moderation unless you experience reflux; then caffeine can make this condition worse. Too much of anything, including caffeine, can have side effects. Caffeine is a stimulant, and it can interfere with the absorption of some key nutrients.

Trust me, you won't have to give up coffee!

I was taken off caffeine as well. Initially it is hard but manageable. Many people post-op are able to return to drinking coffee. Caffeine can irritate the pouch. It is also a diuretic which can cause dehydration.
I had GERD and ulcers. Ulcers are common after GBS which is why my practice did not want me having coffee until further notice.

I do indulge on decaf coffee here and there. I seem to do ok with it.

Just make sure you adhere to the guidelines as set forth for you as there is a reason for their restrictions.

I was told to limit my coffee intake to 2 cups a day, in large part because I had some major GERD going on. (Which appears to be gone post-op :D ) Coffee came on my clear liquid tray in the hospital and I asked my doc again if it was OK to drink it - yup, just no cream, creamer, or milk. I used to drink 5 or 6 cups a day and did wean myself down before surgery to avoid withdrawal headaches. Surprisingly, coffee doesn't call to me like it did pre-op - doesn't taste the same somehow.... but tea is another story!

I was told that Caffeine makes you hungry, plus makes the acid reflux worse.

Just to make things confusing.. I've be allowed to have caffeine, coffee specifically since the very beginning :) My surgeon does not have a restriction against it.

Caffeine is a diuretic and can contribute to dehydration. It's a necessary sacrifice for the first three months post-surgery. Once your pouch has healed and grown a bit, you won't be at such a risk for dehydration. I love coffee and I reluctantly, slowing decaffeinated myself pre-surgery. My calendar is already marked for the date when I can again enjoy morning coffee--but I'll probably start with decaf for a while, just to see how I do.

Try taking Tylenol for a few weeks daily to help with the headaches from the caffeine withdrawl.... : )

Ttry Click Espresso protein! Makes a great morning meal, or you can mix it with coffee for a cafe latte, or frosty latte. We make two mixed and I have one for breakfast and one for later. Check on Eggface for Ice cream and recipes you can also use it for.

make sure you wean yourself off of it before your surgery. You'll not be able to drink anything for the first 24 hours after your procedure, so you will want to focus on healing from that, rather than a nasty withdrawl headache.
