So I had my bypass this last Dec 31st. Went last night w/ son & his g/f out to eat (well they ate, I visited w/ them) My son had a little bit of Mexican rice left on his plate. I asked him if I could have it? All the while I had been very good and only sipping my ice water. never giving it a 2nd thought I ate the last 4-5 bites.It didn't take long...I felt I was choking. It didn't even reach my stomach!!
Scared to death, thinking I was gonna die in this Mexican restaurant...I ran to the restroom. Barely making to the toilet...some came up. I was tjhankful yet still scared thinking Ive damaged myself inside!!! How could I be soo stupid to do such a thing? I wasn't thinking of the water I had drank (rice swells). I know Im not suppose to have rice...it just looked/smelled good.
We left and about a hour later stomach pain subsided.
Well that was a lesson well learned...the hard way. Rice doesn't go down/stay down or pass thru well. :{

I have found myself almost doing something like that. Habits die hard! Unfortunately for some of us, this is how we learn. Sorry you had this experience!

Oh my, I'm sure we have all done that or come close for sure. I can't remember what it was I did that with but I certainly remember paying the price for a reach and eat!

I'm glad you're okay. I think I paid the price for about a day and a half of uncomfortableness from whatever it was I grabbed.

Don't be so hard on yourself, Like you said, lesson learned.
My advise would be to wait to go out to eat until you can eat too.

That happened to me too!!! Rice and those really thin Chinese noodles!!! Bloated me right up!!! I once read somewhere they stopped throwing rice at weddings cuz the poor birds would eat it up and die from bloat!! I can believe it!! now

I still at almost 4 months out cant tolerate rice, pasta, and most meats. I think its because it is almost impossible to chew those things up to an applesauce consistency. You definitely need to be careful being so close out from surgery. And also be careful with drinking anything 30 minutes prior to, during, and 30 minutes after meals. This was something I really struggled with in the beginning especially during meals. Its hard enough to get some foods down, but doing it without a drink was so hard for me. You can do it though, its definitely a learning time for all of us :)

I eat very little rice even at over a year post op. Rice swells and clumps both. Not good for our pouches.

SO SORRY YOU HAD TO GO THRU THAT. IT HAPPENED TO ME TO I GUESS SOMETMES THE HARD WAY IS THE BEST WAY TO LEARN. I HAVENT TOUCHED RIE IN 4.5 MONTHS AND IM HISPANIC LOL GOOD LUCK :)

You're definitely not alone. I'm sure we've all done things we shouldn't have out of habit. I'm 5 weeks out and last night I ate some chicken, which is ok. Then after seeing how little fluid I had taken in, I sat down and started drinking without thinking. I only took 2 sips before I remembered, but what I'm getting at, like said above, old habits really are hard to break.

I would be surprised if we didn't all have at least one time that this happened. For me it was a hamburger (no bun), I was lucky to be alone in my car, having just dropped off my friend...it was terrible. As some of the others said...Lesson learned!

I am 21 months out, and still have trouble with rice, even a bite or two.

I love rice and so I understand when you say it looked and smelled good but I did the same thing not realizing that it would swell. I have said my good byes to rice and am looking for a new favorite food! :)

I stopped to get gas coming home from work once, and was STARVING. This was about a year and a half out. Grabbed a banana at check out, and ate about half it in route. Stopped at my inlaws for something or another as she was making chicken wings. I peeled the skin off and ate about three bites of it. Then left. Like an idiot. About 5 minutes into my drive home I was violently throwing up into a plastic grocery bag, while driving about 30mph during rush hour. Its just one of those things, some days I can can eat it, some days... apparently not.
