Hi All,
I just had my sleeve surgery 3 days ago. I was very nervous and didn't know what to expect so I wanted to post a little about my experience to help others with questions. My surgery took about 2 hours and another hour of recovery time. Because my surgery was in the afternoon I spent two nights in the hospital. The first night after the surgery I was bloated (they fill your stomach with air), cramping and in a lot of pain. I was provided pain relief every two hours when the nurses came in to take my vitals. Nothing to eat or drink that night. I did ask for a wet sponge to keep my mouth wet and that helped. The next morning I was allowed to have 30ml of water per hour and I began taking Gas X melt away strips (I brought them with me to the hospital). The mint flavoring of the strips also helped settle my stomach. I got up and washed up (no shower yet) and I felt a little better. Moving definitely does help with the gas. I walked 5 or 6 times that day and was able to cut back on my pain meds. My surgeon allowed me to have a popsicle that night, but I really only wanted a couple of licks and I was done with it. The next morning I had a Carnation Instant Breakfast shake (only drank about 2 oz) and it stayed down fine. A warning, every time I introduced something to my new stomach it would cramp for a bit. I came home yesterday and I am feeling better than I thought I would. I had a 4 oz protein shake for dinner and 1/2 of a sugar free popsicle. I am trying to aim for 50-60g of protein and clear liquids over the next 10 days. I am also sipping water constantly to avoid dehydration. The cramping after my sleeve was part of it too, but walking and sipping water as often as possible helped get the gas out of the way and keep the cramping to a minimum. Happy healing!
Hot, herbal tea helped calm my cranky pouch during the first month or so (and I don't even like tea!)
