Gastric Bypass Surgery Support Group
Gastric bypass (GBP) is any of a group of similar operative procedures used to treat morbid obesity, a condition which arises from severe accumulation of excess weight in the form of fatty tissue, and the health problems ("co-morbidities") which result. So, I have been pondering letting the rest of the world (ok, so facebook) know I was having surgery... I couple already did, but they've never said a word. Here is what I posted:
To my wonderful family and friends!
In about 2 or 3 weeks I will be having gastric bypass surgery. I have spent the last 8 months researching this decision and I am not making it lightly. After 4+ years of eating healthy and exercising, I am still unable to lose weight. My doctor says I have trashed my metabolism. Thru my changed eating habits and exercise I have managed to get my cholesterol into a healthy range, and my blood pressure meds were cut in half. I also managed to keep diabetes at bay until last fall when my health took a turn for the worse that affected my mobility. I am NOT ok with this and it has been the straw that made my decision. I need to get these extra pounds off so I can be healthy and active again. I plan on going to grad school next year, and I want to do it healthy! I know this is not an easy solution (anyone who thinks it is has NOT done their research!) and is a lifetime commitment of hard work. I know what I am doing, I know the risks, and I have a wonderful surgeon from a Center of Excellence. I have jumped the hoops required to have the surgery, including 6 months of monitored dietitian visits and a psy eval (ha! Im NOT crazy after all!). All I ask is one of two things. Support me and my journey with open arms and hearts, and if you cannot do this, keep your nay saying opinions to yourself. I respect your opinion even if it differs from mine, please do the same in return. At this point, I am just waiting for the call as to when my surgery date will be. It will be tough for a while, but I am confident and prepared. I am turning 53 in 6 days, I am thrilled with my life and I have lots of dreams and plans yet to fulfill. This surgery will give me the opportunity to have the health necessary to continue on fulfilling my dreams! Thank you for your support that I know I will receive from so many of you! feeling loved.

As I said you have my support 100% and more, I hope your family members will come around and understand this is for YOU!

One friend of my husband, who works with patients who need assisted living (not just elderly) expressed concern for me because he's seen a few horror stories, but that is the ONLY thing I've heard that was remotely negative, and that was just out of concern.
Someone mentioned wanting to use my verbiage as a template of sorts.... PLEASE DO! I do not care at all!
