to join the Loser's Club! My husband and I are going to an informational seminar tomorrow night at a bariatric surgery center. I've almost made up my mind to go to Plano TX for the surgery with Dr. Nick Nicholson, but my husband is reserving his opinion until after the meeting tomorrow night and hearing all the medical information on all of the different types of surgery. I don't think he will object since I have been participating in a weight-loss research study in which I had surgery to implant a vagal nerve blocker into my abdomen which has electrical leads going to the nerves running to my stomach. I wear a device around my waist that controls the implant and a "cell-phone" size computer on my waistband. It's just not working the way I would have hoped it would. I lost some at the beginning, but in Oct 2010, I was diagnosed with Rheumatoid arthritis and the lbs have been inching upward ever since.
I need to get the weight off so my joints don't ache and I am able to exercise more. My primary doctor and my rheumatologist have both given their blessing for this surgery. I just wish Mayo Clinic was cheaper - $40000 for the vertical sleeve, and up to $68,000 for the gastric bypass. I'm thinking of going to TX because I can save $40000 to $55000 for the same surgery. My insurance doesn't pay for bariatric surgery because my employer waived this benefit to save company money so I will be using the self-pay option.
I'm ready to part ways with this extra weight and I'm embarrassed to admit that I am 90 lbs heavier than when my husband fell in love with me.

Just make a good list of your questions and concerns and don't be shy about asking them. A reputable surgeon won't have a problem with you questioning him/her. It's an important decision, and they want you to be informed and ready.
