Gastric Bypass Surgery Support Group
Gastric bypass (GBP) is any of a group of similar operative procedures used to treat morbid obesity, a condition which arises from severe accumulation of excess weight in the form of fatty tissue, and the health problems ("co-morbidities") which result. If you are considering gastric bypass or have had it, join the community where we share our experiences and find support.
However, I have had surgeries in the past where they didn't want me to be alone for 24 hrs after.... For this surgery it never came up tho. We are suppose to walk as much as possible, so getting up to get things for myself I figured was just good for me.
But we are all different.... And we all heal different... and each of us has a different surgery experience. I was very lucky! I've also had much worse surgeries I've recovered from so this was a stroll in the park in comparison :)
Well, I had a few more complications but I stayed with my mom for a little bit. I was so glad to have the help. I think in your situation, that someone being there is a good idea. but definately not someone unreliable. Do you have any other friends that could stay with you? You may be okay with just the hha however. It just depends like becca said, how well you heal.
I pretty much just wanted sleep my first two days home, then I started moving in small units. But it all depends on how you handle surgery, so it will be better to have your support in place just in case. You can always send someone home if all is well.
Do you go to church? You could put in a request for assitance and have someone stop by a few times a day for you.
If airfare wasn't so insane right now I would offer to fly for you. :) I hate the feeling of being alone when you really need someone.
But, if my friend promises to be here, she does know that I really, really need her. My home health aide is great, and she is also a friend, so if it falls on a weekend, I have my cousin, who is a teacher..that can stop over, or she could stop over after work during a weekday or 2...(She works right down the street from my house).
Thanks Golden, you're such a sweetie to say that!
I'm just trying to prepare in advance, cause I don't know what to expect with the condition my joints are in, prior to surgery....how it will affect me moving around after. I do plan on walking with my walker, out on the street!!! Just look for the woman with a walker, walking funny, but walking! I know that's important . But will probably do that every day, when my aide can walk along side me, just in case, cause balance is not 100%.
I really DO need this surgery, so I can walk and stand like a normal person, besides improve my healthy eating!!!!

i would schedule the friend, but since she is unreliable, have a back up plan in case you need it. although no ONE person maybe be able to stay with you 24/7, you may find people are able to come by regularly to help.
if i were you once you have your surgery date prep some food. i would freeze little containers or ice cubes of pureed food. use a blender bottle for your shakes and just make one each morning then store in fridge.
for me the hardest part was getting up and down. if your friend doesn't show, if you can at least try to get a person there morning, afternoon, and evening that would help you.
good luck!

Good luck!
If you handle pain well you probably will be fine but I would have someone stay at least one or two nights to see.
When you get your date talk to one of the nurses in your program they do it all.
I go thru Visiting Nurse Association, and i'm on their Long Term Health Care program called Options.
I may be able to ask for someone more hours that week I come home, I already mentioned it, so they said they may be able to provide that. Not 100 percent sure, but 'may" be able to...
THanks so much for all of your comments!I I really appreciate it!!
